We recruit great talent and have great heart but until our coaches decide to stress tackling, blocking, and stop being so damn predictable we will not be at the precipice of college football. We have lost the fundamentals of basic football that is needed to take a conservative team to the top. If you'r strategy is to run the ball then you need to block well. If you pride yourself on you'r D, and the speed of the D, then you need to tackle well. UT has done a poor job of both and we all know it. How many times have we seen missed tackles that resulted in a 10 to 15 yard gain. Why cant we stop a team from getting a first down on 3 and 15. I love the Vols but we need to STEP UP. We have the talent NOW WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH IT.

I'd have to say that I agree. There is a reason that the last few years' teams have not looked like UT football is supposed to. I'm confident, however, that Fulmer is so unhappy with the last few years he will find a way to get us back on top...sooner than most may think.

Eric tell me where I am off.

I totally agree with your posts as I have made VERY similar posts last year. I just wish we didn't have to talk about it for the next 15+ days cause I don't know how long I can maintain all the positive energy I have.

OK I see and good point. I want to see the VOLS take the field and render me speechless on how solid they will play. So I am right with you but we need to play GREAT FUNDAMENTAL FOOTBALL.

Completely and utterly agree. I just don't want to reminded of it 6,345 times before we play either, kinda takes the wind out my sails.

True, but Eric it will make a win againts CAL that much sweeter when the team shows us we R back. The fact you see the problems makes you a greater fan. I want UT to stun me in CALI. I do know how you feel though.:salute:

I'll consider us back when Tebow is lying on his rump and pouting after Rico McCoy stomps a mud hole in him. Remember, we dominated Cal last year and we all know that wasn't a real good measuring stick to look at at the end of the season.

It has been mentioned, but Fine definitely has a well stated point this time around. If UT is going to be comitted to the run, then they need to have one of the better offensive lines in the country. Why? Because it still seems like defenses know exactly where the ball is going.

People give Fine a lot of crap (sometimes for good reasons). I honestly think that this particular post is very well stated, and provide insight on the crux of the issue. CPF decided not to go in a different direction with his offense when Cut was hired. UT is a better football team when they run the ball well, and between the talent and coaching on the OL, for the last few years UT has lost their identity. As long as this offense is in place, talent and fundamentals is the only thing that will make it work simply because it will rarely win on scheme alone.

Some will say that talent and fundamentals are important for every offense, and I don't disagree, but the newer offensive trends tend to put a heavier burden on scheme and fooling defenses. As long as CPF is running the show, UT will simply depend on the "my guy is more talented and more fundamentally sound than your guy".

Yeah, it's time for football season to get here.

Look, everything you are saying is 110% true. But at this point, I'm ready for the season to start and curious to see if some of the buzz we've been hearing recently is true. Maybe Fulmer has changed. Maybe his attitude about playing young talent early has changed. Maybe he has gotten less conservative. Maybe the no huddle adds a new wrinkle that makes us less predictable.

What? Who says we don't develop, or coach well, or get good talent. Give it a rest. We're on the SEC roller coaster. We recruit against Richt, Myer, Tuby, SOS, Nicki, LSU, FSU, Clemson, VT. And that's just a short list of regional programs that are right up there. Plus, we also have to play most of them. Life is not what it used to be when it was only UT, UF, LSU and AU. Personally, I think Richt is a better coach. Is he having his biscuit and gravy every day because he's a top coach. Maybe better than most see CPF around here. It's the new era. The SEC alone is stronger accross multiple teams than any point in my life I can remember. I hate to be accepting of mediocre times, but the only people this stretch of ours can be overly traumatic to are the ones that don't remember the ever present 7-4 and 8-3 records of the 80's, and late 70's.

He didn't say that we didn't get good talent. He just said we don't develope it well or "coach them up" once they get here. You got 2 out of the 3 right.

i would rather lose by getting my a** kicked by a better team than to lose by the stupid stuff we have been losing by lately...i.e. piss poor tackling, blocking, fundamentals = piss poor performance!!!

agreed. and that was fine when you were lining up Charles McCrae, Chad Clifton, Eric Still, etc...on the o line and John henderson, Albert Haynesworth, Darwin Walker etc...on the D line.....we could operate under the "we do what we do, try and stop it" mentality.....

i do think though that this year, there are some indications that this mentailty is changing based on the personnel we have.....
