The Truth About Our Coaches

Good recruiting is the lifeblood of a college football program.

It helps the coaches look better, look smarter, have job security, and get raises. It gets the team's games on TV. And it keeps the fans happy.

For me, time passes slowly waiting for these recruits to make their presence felt. Give it a couple of years.

But we had more talent than UCLA...still, they weren't able to out coach their opponents. I'm worried that solid recruits won't be enough to compete with Florida, Alabama, and LSU.

For starters, PF had 14 1st round draft picks as head coach. His staff recruited Eric Berry. I honestly think, from a talent stand point, the only glaring need is QB, but that is not from a lack of trying. To my understanding, from a recruiting standpoint, those QBs on your roster were HS standouts that just not have panned out in college. I remember hearing at one time that people thought JC was better than Ainge. Some of that goes on the playcalling as well. You have to break in QBs, you cannot throw them out to the wolves. A coach should know his players strenghts and weaknesses and it is up to the coach to play to the strenghts of his football team.

how many in the last 5 years (or even since Garner left)? I understand they got EB but it couldn't hurt he's a UT legacy (his dad was honored before the UCLA game). His recruiting had pretty numbers but was lacking in filling our needs (OL, DL and QB). It will take the current staff at least 2 more signing days to undo the damage

Coaching has a lot to do with it. There is a saying a great coach can beat you with his team and beat his team with your players. Only time will tell where Kiffin will be.

Coaching is the life blood of a program...recruiting is a close second
Look at Utah, BYU, Boise ST....all usually have consistent success with average players...

Truth also is we are in the top 5 in recruiting right now. We haven't seen a recruiting list littered with this many stars in years.

I follow high school football and recruiting as closely as anyone that is not a college coach. I can tell you that after today's huge recruits that our coaches have pulled.... no one on these boards should say anything negative about our staff. What we are accomplishing right this minute on the recruiting trail is UNREAL! We get embarrassed on national television.....and the NEXT DAY we pull two of the finest defensive players in the United States. True fans that understand recruiting and can see the big picture know how bright our future is going to be! This staff is unbelievable....and I am excited and proud that we have them as Vols!

well said, thats 100% true...keep your eyes on the prize volnation....we will get there soon...

It is realistic to see some recruits head elsewhere after a bad loss but i have a bad feeling about this year when it comes to these big recruits we may get, i know its only 1 game but after UCLA game two things hit me, one - how bad is our QB depth chart when crompton is starting, 2nd how many recruits are heading elsewhere? we better beat OH and Memphis and win 3 sec games our else we loose 8-10 solid players from the recruiting trail. Thats a fact. I also heard through a reliable source that regardless of the season this year UT is a preseason top 25 team, yes "pulling out the next year card, u have not?"

Not exactly sure why some of you are saying PF and company could not recruit, according to Rivals.com since 2002:

2002 - #2 in the country
2003 - #18
2004 - #11
2005 - #4
2006 - #23
2007 - #3
2008 - not ranked (I'm sure for obvious reasons)
2009 - #10 (I say you can give most credit to LK)
2010 - #7 so far

It just looks like the recruiting was not consistant. But guys, talent isn't everything. Eddie O is known for his recruiting, that is what landed him the Ole Miss job. He recruited well, but how did that turn out for him?

Some of you are throwing PF under the bus, but the fact is that man coached UT for years, brought SEC championships and a national title. How many coaches can say they have done that? He was only one of 4 SEC coaches that had that resume. Granted, I agree it was time for him to move on but some of you speak of him like he did not do anything for that university.

What obvious reasons? The 2008 recruiting class would have come after the 2007 season in which the Vols where 10-4 so... what obvious reasons?

Talent... yes. But you forget the key player for any team... the QB... enough said.

I have been watching this board since last night...and reading all of the meaningless and silly posts about how ugly we looked and how bad Crompton is and how we got outcoached. None of it...none...means anything. We have the finest staff in America in Knoxville. We are getting players as we speak that were UNTOUCHABLE before Kiffin and Co. were hired. Untouchable. Most on here are so blinded by Crompton's 3 interceptions that they can't see we are sitting on a goldmine. That team we saw yesterday was not Lane's team. It was still mostly a leftover Fulmer product. Stop the negativity and stop the senseless comments about Crompton. It doesn't matter. When our staff finally assembles the product on the field that they are working on as I write this.....then Tennessee will be at heights we only have wished for.

We didn't get out coached, we got outplayed on offense, majorly. Our coaches are doing one hell of a job. Coaching football and recruiting at the same time is no easy task, especially after a loss. We need to ALL support the team and players and stop saying negative stuff.

Oregeron did that at Ole Miss as well. Then he was fired.

Right now, Tennessee is looking at back to back top 10 classes. #7 last year, and right now at #3.

Orgeron's highest recruiting ranking while at Ole Miss was 15.

Tennessee's future looks much brighter than Orgeron's did at Ole Miss.

I agree with what you posted but would like your thoughts on the timing of this. Do you think the announcement of 3 huge recruits for UT has any coincidence with the fact we just got beat by UCLA in our own house?

I'll hang up and listen to your response...:)

I appologize, I thought that was the season ya'll did not do so well, but in 07 UT actually played us in the SEC Championship game. I guess there is not a similarity.

I think the op is on to something. The future looks a lot brighter. Yes we will have our bumps in the road along the way, but I truly think this staff can recruite and develope the talent they have and will recruite. We have to admit that Fulmer didn't leave any studds in the stable at the QB position and that is the position that is killing us the most. Lets just chill out, relax, and enjoy watching our Vols eVOLve into something special. :zeitung_lesen:

For those that say the coaches lost that game...specifically 5150. Here is an Oku quote, I think he gets it:

"Games are not always going to go the way you plan them to. That's why you come to practice. That's why do more film study. It's just about us as players. We have to find that edge. Coaches can coach to us for so long, but they can't step out on that field on a Saturday and do it for us. It's just about us and what we do."

unless 2007 when we were third

Take a look at the 5 and 4 star recruits Tennessee got in 2007, and tell me what they've done for UT.

This recruiting class was number 3 because of:

Eric Berry, Chris Donald, Ben Martin, Kenny O'Neal, Brent Vinson, Lennon Creer, Gerald Jones, Donald Langley, Nevin McKenzie, Ahmad Paige, Darris Sawtelle, BJ Coleman, Rolando Melancon, Rae Sykes, Chris Walker, and DeAngelo Willingham.

With the exception of Eric Berry, and possibly Chris Walker, tell me...who out of this group has lived up to their potential???

Ben Martin hardly looks like a 5 star player, we haven't heard ANYTHING about Chris Donald. O'Neal, Creer, Paige, Coleman, Sawtelle, and I believe a few others left the team.

This recruiting class had done NOTHING for us so far, with the exception of Eric Berry.

That means, it was 3 very bad recruiting classes in a row for Fulmer. If this class was ranked today, it would probably 30th in the country.
