There's nothing that stops us from having a sane relationship with Russia, which we do and always have (although the decision to include the Baltic States into NATO was absolutely stupid).

But to answer your exact question, we can never have a "friendly" relationship with Russia. If you think Americans think themselves special, then you have never known a "Russian." They think the earth, the sun, and the moon revolve around them (you do the math).

It's all about trade and access though, in its most fundamental form. A strong Russia controls the largest resources on Earth (not just within its political borders but on the energy resourcehouses that surround it). A strong America keeps that from happening, or vice versa. Whichever good v. evil you prefer, but the basic narrative is the same.

I, for one, believe that if some nation's *******s are going to be leading the world into oblivion, it may as well be ours.

dumb analogy. The US didn't own Crimea. Ukraine did, as per that treaty/document Russia signed after the fall.

the better analogy would be if the US started using its military to annex pieces of Canada. and yes that would be wrong and I would expect the UN/Russia whoever to have a thing or three to say about it.
