newsflash: losing a player or two never hurt any team.
Says the same folks excusing 5-7 records because we don't yet have any depth to compete.
And it's more than one or two. Try 5 or so. Hendrix, Scott, Helm, Miller, Payne, etc.
Of course UT should recruit 4 and 5 star guys, but I don't think they should exclusively recruit highly rated guys. Your whole justification for why losing these guys hurts is that they were highly rated. That's an impeccably weak argument.
Also, I never said you had a transfer preference, but one of my points in the OP is that a certain amount of guys have to move on. The guys are leaving for a multitude of reasons, but it seems they decided UT wasn't a fit for them. I'd rather guys who aren't a fit move along no matter what ranking they had. It's good you like high rated guys cause in your perfect no transfer world we would only have room for three 5 stars as an entire class in 2017. Sounds good for depth, huh?
Well we won six this year so that's out...if we win 8 next year we might have to retire that whole line of complaining.
If the tea leaves continue at their current percolation, we'll be replacing the virtual inactive Payne with a more skilled sophomore in Martin...Helm was already third team BEFORE Ellis got his scholarship...Scott probably wasn't looking forward to being fourth team (at best) behind Hurd, Kamara and Bussey/Love...Miller?...C'MON!...and that leaves Hendrix...hate to lose him...might end up a great player (ain't right now) but hopefully three or four of these incoming DEs can conjure up two tackles.
You're in a great position...if everything goes feet up you can shout and cheer "I told you so"...if it doesn't, you can SHUT UP and cheer (because you're a Vol fan...right?)
Hendrix is the only one that really hurts to lose.

Miller - Who?
Multiple "positive" fans here were predicting a 5 win season and "pre" excusing the failure to make a bowl on depth and youth.
If folks continue to say that the loss of experienced players can be resolved by plugging new recruits in... then you may have to retire that excuse for losing.
The Soph who appeared in 9 games this year at DE who might have helped UT with experienced depth next fall while some of the new guys got their feet on the ground. He also could have been the guy that would have allowed some of the Fr a valuable RS year.
Because of the likelihood that DE will be thin next fall and dependent on true Fr for depth... Miller leaving was probably second worst to Hendrix.
Even if he's not an elite talent, he could have taken a few reps per game to keep Vereen, Maggitt, and Barnett fresh.
Agreed 100%
Paulk / Scott - Immediately negated by Kamara and Hurd's impeding stardom
Helm - Wolf, Branisel, Creamer, Oliver - Plenty of TEs for the future
Payne - EE who still didn't contribute, who have been buried on the depth chart
Henderson - Would have added depth but we have 2 great starters and adding to it with the 2015 class
Miller - Who?
Sawyer - Hopefully he stays if not, McKenzie, Tuttle and Picou will make up for it
That got messed up with winning 6...progressing may retire the complaining about excuses that aren't being used?
I don't agree that all would be great players. They are frosh. They could all pan out to be munoz's (the younger one). It's the supposed quality of guys we are losing. Most would agree that the majority of these guys would be contributers in the future. You can't build depth by continuing to throw in true freshmen who aren't ready yet. You would hope that the transfers would come from the 3rd or 4th string guys that have had a couple years in the program. By that time you will know if they might do better at a smaller program where they can get some playing time.
So effectively what you are saying is the complaint that UT was too dependent on Fr last year was bogus, right? If all of these 2nd and 3rd year players can easily be made up for by true Fr from the '15 class... then why was playing Fr such a problem this past season?
You can't have it both ways. Either playing/starting Fr weakens your roster and chances of winning or else losing (some) of these guys was not good.
