Actual story from this weekend:
so one of my wife's good friends (just 30yo) has been in the ICU for a heart problem all weekend. She's been in an induced coma and needs a transplant (was actually dead for 7min and was brought back). Anyway it was very sudden and her mom is up there all day watching over her only child.
The friend's med coverage had a large deductible and her mom went to pay it. After several days of no sleep and wondering if her daughter would live, here's what the billing person said to her (this was face-to-face)
Mom: Here to pay the bill for Brooke.
Hosp: That will be $xxxx. We accept all credit cards or your first born in trade.
All I know is that my mom would have jumped over the desk. To her credit the mom explained to the billing person what was going on and why that was not appropriate and left the person in tears over her bad joke.
