1. Jon Gruden
Pros:
-Very Successful NFL coach
-Great X's and O's
-Works with college QB's all the time
-Would have a great staff
-Would be the best Cultural fit. He knows the expectations, he knows UT football, and has a great energetic personality.
Cons:
-Very, VERY expensive
-Unproven on college level

2. Scott Frost
Pros:
-Part of Oregon's days of dominance
-Background in offense and defense on College level
-Great offensive mind, develops QBs well.
-His UCF team is currently undefeated and will likely remain so. They are destroying people. Including a decent Maryland team, and a good Memphis team.
Cons:
-Not much HC experience
-No Power 5 HC experience
-Could bolt for Nebraska

3. Matt Campbell
Pros:
-Successful at Toledo
-With an Iowa State team that went 3-9, 2-10, 3-9 in the 3 years before he arrived, is currently 6-2 with 2 wins over top 5 teams in his 2nd year.
-Is ranked 15th in College Football Playoff Rankings.
-Power 5 experience
Cons:
-Only 2nd year at Iowa State
-9 mil buyout

I think any of these 3 guys would do great here. All great coaches.

I like all 3 of those names. Just don't let folks know Campbell came from MAC. The fans will lump all MAC beginners in with Butch. Haha

I'm on board with that being the top 3. I want potential first and foremost, someone who stands the best chance of becoming the next Saban/Meyer. Frost and Campbell are young have had some pretty staggering success/improvement this year, I thunk the former especially has that potential. Gruden represents extremely high potential in a different way, actually a bigger gamble IMO but I would still be thrilled about it.

What I don't want is an older coach who we're hoping can be 80% of what he was at his peak.

Too much baggage for UTAD to consider, also wouldn't be a cultural fit here.

Chip coached at New Hampshire in Durham with a population of 14k for 14 years. Then out to Eugene Oregon over 3,000 miles away and a totally different environment.

But somehow Chip could not fit here culturally?

Also Chip has much less baggage than most think. USC lost 30 scholarships and no bowl for 3 years.....that was bad.

Oregon lost 2 scholarships spread out over 2 years.......that was it. Chip got the show cause because of Pete. The NCAA made a new rule because of Pete and USC. Of any coach leaves a school when the school is going to receive any sanctions that coach will now receive a show cause.

The NCAA said Chip did not commit the or any violation. They also said through their investigation they could confirm Chip did not even know about the violation.

People act like the violation was a big deal; however if it were why did they only get 2 scholarships taken away......and nothing else?

Oh no I agree no big deal on the violation, that's why I said UTAD because they most likely think it's a big deal. And the cultural fit comes from his withdrawn personality, which would not fit as well as Gruden's personality, who is much more out there and energetic.

.

Frost took UCF from 0-12 to undefeated with the #1 ranked offense in America in less than 2 full seasons.

The great coaching Scott Frost has been around and influenced by is astounding; Bill Walsh, Tom Osborne, Bill Parcells, Mike Tomlin, Bill Bellichick, Jon Gruden, Chip Kelly. Particularly Chip Kelly. If you wanna hire Chip Kelly, just hire Scott Frost, he's a younger/hungrier version and he's running the same offense.

I'd be concerned, very concerned, if UT lands him. Of course, he'd be choice #1 for this Florida fan to replace Mac.

As for lack of Power 5 head coaching experience, yes it would be ideal if he had more experience, but he's played and/or coached in so many huge venues I think he'd hold up fine under Power 5 pressure and scrutiny.

Some of the greatest coaches have come the route Campbell has through Toledo, including one, Mr. Saban himself

Certainly agree about Gruden vs Chip personality. However maybe doing some TV work has loosened Chip up.

Also not even sure the UTAD would be very critical of chips baggage..... I'm sure it would be in their mind but if it were Chip they wanted ( and I don't think it is) it wouldn't matter.

Chip will land a good gig for 2018 ad I wish he was at least on Tennessee's short list. However I doubt he is.

As soon as Campebll or Frost lose a game, people will say they are overrated. Personall, I hope we go after much bigger candidates than Campbell and Frost.

Great post and I agree. I think Chip is a no brainer. I would hire him all day long. He took Auburn down to the wire and held them to 22 points in the national championship game.
Even Alabama gave up more points that year to Auburn so I don’t get the argument his style would not translate to the sec.
