The Tidazation of Southern Middle Tennessee

If it makes you feel any better you can get plates in Alabamastan that have Power T's on 'em..... That's true for almost any state.... I live in Georgia and have seen Southern Cal plates on a guy's car....

When did Bama start selling UT plates? That is akin to sacrilege down there.

One of the things that UT fans that live in Tennessee fail to understand about the Bammers is that football is a religion in Alabama. There are many high schools that draw 10-12 thousand fans to every game. Several high schools (Hoover, Russellville, North Jackson, Enterprise, and several others) have facilities that rivals those of Div. 1AA schools. In Tennessee, football is not like that at the high school level (ever been to an Antioch-Hillwood game? You can hear the crickets!) There are some intense fan bases (Clinton, Halls, Oak Ridge, Anderson Co., Giles Co., Lincoln Co., White Station, Central-Merry), but they are few and far between in this state.

No way. I live in Loretto (spelling) but we say "Loretta" born and raised. Surprised you run into someone from that small of a town. I must admit there are alot of Alabama fans here. Mainly because alot of middle-aged people has an Alabama alma-mater (University of North Alabama, UAH, UAB). We live so close to the line they don't charge out of state tuition. But, there are many UT fans that outnumber them my friend and hardcore at that.

It's not only southern middle TN it's all of middle TN. Being a transplant from SW VA where most people in the 70s and 80s were UT fans because that is about all you could get for college football on TV or the radio.

I have never been able to understand why anyone born and raised east of the TN river would be anything but a UT fan. I do know one thing that hurts, the local press and talk radio around Mid TN is unbearable and highly biased against UT.

You got that right. Biddle HATES UT, and all Plaster can drone about is the Preds, Titans, and Commodores. Biddle, who is on WNSR, will trash UT at any opportunity, especially Lane Kiffin.:pinch:

Saw a man yesterday who lives near Loretta, along the Ala-Tenn border. He was distrought because, though he and his children have been lifelong UT fans, two of his grandchildren have jumped on the Bama bandwagon and become Tide fans.

It reminds me of when I was a child during the great Bear Bryant run, many youngsters living in Southern Tennesssee became Tide fans, since the media, Huntsville in particular, is nonstop Bama propaganda (sp). Hopefully, we can turn our program around and the Criminal Tide will get hammered again by the NCAA.

Not to be the grammer police or anything but its Loretto. It's always pronounced as though it was spelled with an A though. Seeing as how I'm from the area, I actually live in Leoma, thats not uncommon. There are plenty of people that have grew up in the area that Bammer fans.

North Alabama has been a hotbed for UT over the years...See Wes Brown, Aaron Sears, Jason Allen, Jayson Swaim...et al...so you are wrong! I remember listening to Vol Calls on the local Hunstville Al. station in the 80's. Something about the Tennessee River and TVA power that brings North Alabama into our yard more than Alabama's yard.

Wes Brown's parents graduated from Loretto High School as a matter of fact. As did myself about 5yrs ago. When I was there just about all the football coaches were Bammer fans, but I can't blame them since most of them were born and raised in AL. They used to take our football players to camps down at Bama and UNA. And since TVA was brought up I'll make mention that I work for TVA in AL and it sucks with all the Bammer fans.

Southern California is the nationwide HQ for bandwagon fans. UCLA beat SC 8 years in a row in the 1990's and the Rose Bowl was packed every game. Now that SC is on top the Trojans are getting all the fans.

What I wonder is how many of these fans actually rooted for one team then switched? I cannot imagine rooting for USC under any circumstances. If the Trojans were playing the Devil I would go to the game with a pitchfork, cloven hooves and a red tail.

I suspect most of the fan increase during good times is a factor of lukewarm stay-at-home fans getting off their butts to see a game in person when their team is a sure winner. (Case in point: Pauley Pavilion in the 1960's and 1970's.)

Many times I have asked southern California sports fans who are not alums of either school which local college team they root for. You know what they say most often? "I root for USC in football and UCLA in basketball." Can you believe that? I cannot fathom that at all. That's like saying "Well, I rooted for the Nazi's in 1940, 1941 and 1942 but after that I rooted for the Allies." Sheesh!

But there is no doubt that southern California sports fans are frontrunners. There are so many teams to choose from in all the major sports - except the NFL - that most fans just latch on to the one doing better. Just a fact of life out here. You not only have to win to get the fans, you have to have STARS!

Just a perspective from another part of the country.

I must say also that high school football between the two states are very different. We play some north Alabama schools before season. They are better on many levels at football but TN has the upside when we play them in basketball. I wish it was the opposite. I don't really know why but they seem better coached and fundamentally sound for some reason?? To me we had the better athletes though. Go figure??

One of my brother-in-law's brothers, who was raised in the Nashville area and went to Samford, is a UNC basketball fan and a Bama football fan. He is obnoxiously vocal about both programs and takes frequent public digs at rival programs.

I have lived in Fayetteville (Lincoln County) for the last 20 years. There are alot of bama fans here. But there are alot of Vol fans also. I can think of at least two dozen people (myself included) here that are huge Vols fans and go to several games every year. But yet I have never seen as much new bama clothing in my life. People I have known here for the last 20 years are all of a sudden bama fans. Makes me sick to my stomach.

What pisses me off is the fact that people can get license plates issued in TN the have the stupid elephant on them.

My plate on my truck says GO VOLS. I live in KY and asked if they could do the letters in orange, they told me I was crazy and lucky to get GO VOLS.

I've noticed people here are UK basketball fans and either Ohio State football fans or some other SEC football fan. Take your pick.

It's spelled Loretto; I should know since it's on my lettermans jacket.

Grant Earnest and John Jacobs are both former coaches who were big Bammers, but grew up in TN.

I'm just north of you in Winchester (when I'm in the US) and I feel your pain. I have often told TN residents with bammer stickers to move the hell out of the great state of TN!

in pulaski it's awful...at my place of work there are 20 people in my particular department of the twenty 4 are die hard bama fans 1 barner and the rest not including myself are luke warm vol fans. there is also 1 guy who claims to be a unc basketball fan and pulls for anybody but tn in football. there are countless other acquaintances and family members who hate the vols that i have. i on the other hand love my home and the university of tennessee is the school that represents my state. that being said even though i never attended a college for more than a semester let alone ut i will still be a volunteer until i die.

Bingo.
Just people with low self esteem that want to be associated with a team that is winning.

I don't think they necc have low self esteem. Everyone wants to be a part of "something", its human nature. The reason boys want to build a club house and have a club, the reason 90% of people slow down and look at wrecks, or when you see balloons and lights, you naturally (whether you notice it or not) want to know what's going on and most want to be a part of it. I for one, have definately noticed this (op) in Spring Hill/Franklin TN. I see more Crimson than Orange. But its what people do, a good example of a team that is loaded with Bwagon fans is UNC bball, or UF fball(although they may lose the Sunday School crowd post Tebow) Just a part of sports, I don't even converse about sports with them because I don't want to seem rude correcting everything they say.
