The Tennesseean reports UT in Talks with TSU for opener

Again, this is not something UT wants. I'm sure if they can manage a better opponent they will, but why do fans not understand that schedules are put together in advance. This was unexpected. UT is in scramble mode along with every other opponent on UABs schedule. It's not like we can just call up any school and schedule them for that weekend NEXT YEAR.

If the NCAA had any shred of usefulness left, it would grant a waiver NOW to all the teams on UAB's schedule for next year. (I don't know what requirements there might be for their more typical opponents, but they might have similar issues.) This is a pretty rare event, thank goodness.

Not saying that at all. But the president of the committee just stated that OOC matters and it is a factor. One of the biggest reasons, other than Baylor not having a conference championship game, why Baylor got left out of the playoff and Ohio State got in. He also has stated that AD's really need to be aware of it when setting schedules.

Its not a matter of ranked teams, its a matter of quality opponents.

You can choose to ignore it or not. Simply playing in the SEC is not gonna be enough with this committee system.

I hope to be worrying about that next year this time. I would love to gripe about this next year. We shouldn't blame jones for doing something he has no way of controlling. We didn't boot a team on the sched. I swear you morons would criticize Jones for breathing if you could find a valid argument against it.

If this were the BCS I might agree with you. But with this playoff committee, OOC matters. The President of the committee stated just today on the selection show on ESPN that AD's need to be aware of it when they are setting the schedules in the future. OOC is a factor.

We aren't making the playoffs next year anyway.

I believe the esteemed previous poster was commenting on the new/probably will be revised play-off system.

Enjoy reading the comments regarding OOC issue.

Did not see where there was any complaint that CBJ was, in fact, using up two lungs to breathe.

Some of you guys are funny. Worried about our potential playoff berth next year??? Just stop. We will improve for sure. 9 wins isn't crazy talk but Playoffs??? (Jim mora voice.) Lets say we did run the table...an undefeated or 1 loss SEC school will have played enough tough games that the difference in a TSU and a UAB wouldnt matter. I'm far from a negavol but Im not thinking playoffs in 2015.

True. And, the committee just put Ohio St. in the final four with an OOC schedule of Navy, a loss to Va Tech, Cincinnati and Kent St. So, not only did they play a very weak OOC conference schedule, they actually lost one of those games, yet they still find themselves chosen as one of the final 4 teams. Maybe it's not as important what the committee said, but rather what the committee actually did. I think they put Ohio St in the final 4 because of 2 very impressive wins vs Mich St and Wisconsin, not because of a strong OOC schedule.

It was much better IMO when UT played a decent game as the opener.

I would rather have UT play three creampuffs and one Mid level school like Memphis,Southern Miss or Tulsa. Then at worst UT would be 9-3 in 2015.

I think they put in Ohio St because they are Ohio State and not TCU or Baylor.

Ok, how about, they can easily justify putting Ohio St in because of those 2 very good wins. It certainly wasn't because of how their OOC schedule.

"Simply" playing in the SEC is and will be enough. We know why some non-SEC teams got left out. Because their conferences aren't the SEC.

Put Baylor and TCU with tradition in the SEC. You have them in the playoff. Nuff said.

OSU was really impressive beating Wisconsin 59-0

sometimes you just have to win certain games at important times. Execute upon demand. Not a big OSU fan, but have to give Meyer credit for pulling it off.

Boston College doesn't have a game scheduled yet for Sep. 5th. That would be a bowl team and a power 5 win for UT to open the season with.

We already have a very challenging OOC game scheduled in Oklahoma. We don't need another one imo. Schedule a decent team we'll hammer by at least 3 tds.

Surely we could pick up a C-USA team who's also down a game for UAB falling off the schedule, and schedule it for August 29. It'd fall before either team's schedule is currently supposed to begin. That way you'd not have to worry about who the opponent originally had scheduled for that Sept. 5 where we were supposed to play UAB, or about messing with our October bye (because seriously who wants to play 12 weeks straight).

Conf USA doesn't play round robin, so they likely fill the void by playing another conference foe.

That makes it that much harder to get bowl eligible. We can only count one fcs win a year towards bowl eligibility.

Well shoot. I just hate to play another FCS team; I mean nothing against TSU but even if we got a waiver and could "count" it, I'd rather play someone where we stand to learn at least a little bit more about our team for the year. My search-fu sucks but I know someone recently posted the FBS teams who have a game in hand. I'll keep crossing my fingers for, well not a marquee matchup or anything, but something like the Ohio or Akron games that usually round out the ooc schedule.
