I have been watching the style of guys we're getting in our secondary and they are all willing to lay the hammer. These style of players really can change the way you offenses attack you due to how they WRs are getting basically slayed. Anybody that watched the Super Bowl could see that laying the boom on WRs will end all of the pick play/crossing routes nonsense. Anyways here's my breakdown of the 2014 Vol secondary class.
Safety Todd Kelly Jr.- He's simply the best safety in the country. I don't care where he's ranked the kid can do it all and you won't be running him over in the run game. He's extremely smart and technically sound. Reads his keys well and is a true QB of the defense. I'm extremely excited about this kid being a Vol.
Safety Cortez McDowell-Kid doesn't get enough love in my eyes. He's a special kid at safety. Can lay the boom and covers a lot of ground with his 6'3 frame combined with his 4.5 speed. Has good ball skills as well from playing offense. Hope we use him like Cam Chancellor is used for the Seahawks.
CB Rashaan Gaulden- The most underrated kid in the country. Kid is an elite CB prospect. His skill set projects extremely well in the SEC. Kid is competitive, fast, closes well, nasty, and can flat out hit. He has a very good frame for the CB position too. He's a 5 star caliber kid. IMO Gaulden is very much in the mold of former Bama CB Dee Miliner but is much more physical at this stage.
CB D'Andre Payne- Payne brings the Pain in coverage. I like to see shorter CBs play like Mr. Payne. He's extremely quick, tough, tackles well, is very smart, and is a flat out playmaker. Even if he gains a starting position I'd love to see him in the nickel versus multiple WR sets. His closing speed and coverage skills would help negate those pesky crossing routes. Payne is probably the best natural coverage guy we're bringing in.
CB/FS Evan Berry- Evan Berry is another underrated star. 5'11 190 and legit 4.3 speed this kid has the potential to be extremely special. At CB he can be a monster and at safety well hell his brother is Eric Berry.
His skill set is close to his big brother but I hope he turns into the same level player for us.
CB Emmanuel Moseley- This is the wildcard and maybe the steal of this class. Kid has legit 4.3 speed and is a legit 5'11-6'0 tall. I wondered what his work ethic was like and he's already showing me with his weight gains(from 165 to 180 already). With Coach Martinez coaching him up the sky is the limit if he puts it all together.
One thing I absolutely love about this secondary class is that they all can run. And with Coach Martinez coaching them up(if you ever meet the man you would want to play for him) I have no doubt in the type of secondary we'll have. Putting these guys around superstar Soph CB Cam Sutton means we'll have the Tennessee Legion of Boom Soon. Let's Go Vols!!!!!!!!!!
