The State of the Program

We are progressing but unless Heupel improves the recruiting then we aren’t going to see the big strides we want to see in the next couple of years. I’m also not sure if Heupels offense will work long term it is kinda gimmicky and it’s hard on our defense not allowing for much rest between possessions and other teams will figure it out like they did with Gus’s offense at Auburn. I think Heupel will be a good placeholder coach till the next one in a a few years he will bring stability and guide us thru the stormy waters of this NCAA investigation. His lack of top level recruiting will be his undoing however and we will bring in a coach who can recruit at a high level. He may not have one losing season here in four or five seasons but I do think by the 2025 season we will have a new coach. We should have higher expectations for the football program some fans have just accepted mediocrity sadly after being fed hot doo doo since 2008. 7-5 and 8-4 seasons should be the floor at the a place like Tennessee with all the resources and top notch facilities we have in football. We should be competing for the SEC every three to four years and winning 9 to 10 games it’s unbelievable that we haven’t had a 10 win season since 2007.

I agree with you for the most part. Coach has his house in order and it shows on the field. He does need to recruit at a higher level. Appreciate your thoughts GBO!

And no I’m not calling for him to be fired he’s done a great job this season he deserves alot of praise for completely turning the offense around and putting us in a position to get back to a bowl.

Heupel strikes me as the kind of coach who runs the system he does because of the advantages it confers, not because he’s married to it. If defenses adapt, I think he will adapt in turn.

I wouldn't necessarily call CJH's offense gimmicky. He has blended elements of the wing T, air raid, west coast, inside zone, outside zone and run n shoot, and the veer into his scheme. It's pretty versatile to say the least, and different aspects can be emphasized as the roster changes.

The state of the program? We’ve been teetering on a cliff for about a decade with each new coach taking us closer to the abyss below. We are a hot second from NCAA punishment and we lost a third of our roster before the season started. We have endured two humiliating and unnecessarily public coaching searches, our first four win season followed by our first three win season where we went winless in the SEC. We have multiple embarrassing losses to Kentucky and Vanderbilt In the past decade and somehow managed to lose a home game to Georgia State University. And it wasn’t even really close.

But one of the grownups in the room finally had enough and now it appears that we have started to clean the flesh eating bacteria that has infected our program for so long. It can’t happen overnight though. It took us a long time to get in this mess and will take a long time to get out of it.

But we are UT and expectations are high. I don’t know how CJH will do in the long run, but right now we are lucky to have him, and at the same time, he is lucky to be here. Unlike the last four bozos, I think he understands this better than anyone.

The big difference is, we are establishing an identity again similar to “Wide Receiver U” that Johnny Majors established. This should draw in some good players in recruiting and from the portal. Go Big Orange!!

I agree. It's not a gimmick at all. This offense is versatile. Other teams won't figure it out because it changes each week according to the weaknesses of the opponent. The defense is on the field a lot this season because of failures to stop teams in third and long situations. The offense will actually become more efficient and score more points the longer players are in the system. The defense will give them more opportunities per game when we have sufficient personnel and depth. We ain't seen nothing yet. GBO!

Gimmicky? 😆 😆

Do those of you claiming that Coach Heupel's offense is gimmicky realize that coaches who started running an offense that included the forward pass were also called "gimmicky" at the time?

I guess the forward pass is just a gimmick too.

It is the evolution of the game. Keep up and adapt or get rolled by fiddy.

The pace is causing some to claim gimmick not the plays we are running. We have an unfair advantage by being able to execute quality plays as such a fast pace. That’s why when we get going they start flopping. For all we know the ones flopping might have had too many cookies before the game and aren’t flopping. Even if these players are catching a cramp, it’s time to take that bologna to the sidelines and let play continue.

Any leg cramps I’ve gotten I’ve walked it off with a 100% success rate.

A gimmick isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just something unusual or unorthodox meant to draw people's attention. I've heard numerous people say that this offense should get recruit's attention, etc., etc. and that's a positive. A gimmick doesn't imply that it's illegal. Our pace is an outlier at this moment. If we are successful it'll become less rare.

I'm still very much in "wait and see" mode. I've seen this scenario before where a new coach comes in and immediately surpasses expectations his first season, largely doing so with the previous.coach's players, only to peter out 2-3 years later once his own players are fully on the roster. So far Heupel's recruiting hasn't been very encouraging and I and a lot of people know it largely isnt his fault. However I also know that fan's memories are short in college football and I'm wondering if in 2-3 years the natives are going to be restless because our team is struggling to find wins because of these early recruiting problems in Heupel's tenure. Right now I'm pinning my hopes on this staff's ability to take unprecedented advantage of the transfer portal and find under the radar recruits and develop them. A fool's hope? Perhaps. But what choice do I have?

Huh? What team do you follow again?

Bc you CANNOT be talking about Heupel and this year’s Vols.

The cupboard was BARE dude. Our best players bolted including multiple starters. Heup had almost nothing to work with. He pulled a Houdini act year 1. An average coach would have struggled to win 5 games. Pruitt may not have won 4.

Heup’s biggest win was building a don’t quit competitive culture in the locker room. A day in day out winning prep process.

If I’m a top O skill player thinking about the portal especially a QB I’m RUNNING not walking to play for coach Heupel and TN next year.
