The Spike and Botched Illegal Participation Penalty on the spike play (merged)

You can count right ? on the playing field there are more than 11.Its not rocket science.

Seems pretty clear. It sounds like he is debating "participating in the play." A participant (player) is participating in the play when he is ON THE FIELD. That's the green area between the long parallel white lines. Hope that helps.

I think the hit was a save hit he led with his shoulder-pads not the helmet. Now we should have never been there if we just hit the xp.Linclon's low kicking cost the game we make that, doesn't matter if they spike it or not. It's ballgame VOLS WIN.

Didn't read through all of the post, but one thing I didn't see on the first few pages is about the UNC WR being out of bounds on JJ's hit. If the WR did gain control(which I don't believe he did) it should have been a moot point. I watched the replay 20 times and the Wr's helmet clearly hits the ground first out of bounds. It should have been incomplete.

The refs are enforcing the rules in place. There should be a 10 second run off in college for situations like this.

JJ's hit was dirty and #42 should have been flagged for a personal foul prior to the chaos.

UT's defense is its own worst enemy right now.

Maybe the Adios CUM tears have your eyes swollen....he was shoved in the back by a Tarheel player knocking him off balance onto the player.

Also if Dooley takes the 5 yd delay of game penalty knowing he is going to punt it anyway instead of calling a T.O. This in turn left ONE SECOND on the clock.:banghead2::censored::bash::mega_shok:

The refs sent this game into OT, not UNC.
actually running the ball 3 straight plays when they had 2 time outs left cost us the game. all we needed was a first down we were moving the ball through the air we should have never got conservative and ran 3 striaght plays. maybe run on first and second, but give us a shot on 3rd down to get the first with a pass. would of only cost us 4 seconds which would not have mattered anyway. All I know is we are giong to be nasty in the next couple of years Hunter and Rogers are beasts. We need a solid tight end and a solid RB after next year and we are going to be legit. A big DT would help also:loco:

How do you figure that only costs us four seconds? Also do you not think four seconds would have made a huge difference?

my thoughts exactly. That play right there was botched on multiple levels.....the refs had multiple fail safes to fall behind and make the right call. JJ led with his shoulder, receiver didn't maintain possession all the way to the ground, and he clearly landed out of bounds. It was just laughable that the refs made that call. Although I'm no conspiracy theorist, seeing that call in conjunction with the failure to recognize that NC had too many men on the field makes me seriously question the integrity of the ref crew.

I think it is safe to say that the Big 10 officials are not used to seeing hits like Jacksons in a football game... I mean they are from the Big 10. Surprised they didn't kick him out of the game. Horrible horrible call, no way that's a dirty hit, and if I remember right he did the same type of hit earlier in the game and it didn't get flagged.

And what the heck is Robert Smith's problem with UT? Is he just trying to defend the Big 10 or what? Even called Bray a bobble head.... What a joke

Another issue is actually putting half a second back on the clock. I agree that on the spike, the ball hit the ground when the clock was showing one. BUT how many times during a game when the official stops the clock is an extra second or two erroneously run off the clock? Are we going to start reviewing EVERY incomplete pass, and EVERY time somebody runs out of bounds to put a half second back on the clock. Consistency is important here. Make the call all the time or not at all...

Robert Smith was probably a buckorgan fan when we beat them in the Citrus Bowl when they had Eddie George and Orlando Pace (96?).

the precedent's been set now

There weren't more than 11 guys participating in that play...

Wrong! 7 total players run in from the sidelines and only 6 run off or are attempting to run off when the ball was snapped. 12 players are in formation. I watched the replay repeatedly and counted meticulously.

You are totally correct. 12 players did participate and I watched it several times also.

I do not blame the refs; they did nothing wrong IMO. Our kicker misses a PAT. Our punter punts it into the endzone. Our D goes into a prevent defense, which prevents you from winning.

You have to at least admit the FG should have been kicked from 10 yards further back. The 5yd penalty should have been 15yd since the kicker made it 12 men on the field in the formation.

the field ref, did the right thing, he called "end of game"

it was the replay official that botched the call

Hey Stevie Wonder....go back and watch the replay for the 10th time.....your level of credibility went sub-zero with that comment
