The Spike and Botched Illegal Participation Penalty on the spike play (merged)

Nvm. GA VOL, the new picture posted makes it easy to see the sixth man :hi:
I had to look at it a few times too. It's hard to see the Center and the RT that is obscured by the slot man, but they are clearly there.

The previous play was the spike, the they actually got it right by not running the clock.

I still don't understand how the spike counted if the play was nullified by the penalty. If it was a completed pass instead of a spike that was called with too many men on the field, the pass would not count. I'm not claiming anyone is wrong. I just don't understand.

I'm glad to see this thread. I just went back and watched it yet again. Yes, NC had players trying to get off the field, but they still had 12 in formation (the kicker and holder were behind the QB) at the snap. Illegal Participation is a 15 yard penalty!!!!!

The rule is if you break the huddle with 12 or more men its 5 yards but if you snap the ball with more than 11 its a 15 yarder. They clearly had more than 11 on the field at the time of the snap and not only that but they were not all set.

Totally agree. Honest mistake. If anyone else wants further proof, go to the youtube link posted earlier in the thread. Instead of pausing it at the 27 sec mark, pause it at the 31 sec mark. At the 31 sec mark, the four other players are completely off the field, and all the UNC players participating are clearly visible. Much easier to count. No doubt, there are 12: 6 linemen, 3 WR's, 1 QB, 1 holding the kick, and the kicker.

unfreakin believable..... these damn officials suck.... how do they get this wrong and should have been a 15 yard penalty and clock should have been started. and the play before the spike was a running play... so clock should be restarted.

Even if you discounted the players running off the field, there are still 12 players.

And not to harp on this, but it's not that I'm whining about a ref's judgment call. Too many men on the field is a reviewable element on replay. It's unconscionable that they either didn't count or didn't know how many yards to walk off.

Twelve UNC players were lined up for the play when it was snapped. Four more were running off. The 12 men lined up on the play would be illegal participation...not too many men on the field. That is a 15 yard penalty...not five. It is a 15 yard penalty if the players are lined up and not attempting to exit the playing field. Count for yourself.

Perhaps a little easier to see:

There are 17 guys on the field in this picture. 12 in the play and 5 running off. Maybe one hit the sidelines by the snap but clearly 12 participate and at least 4 more on on the field at the snap.

Everything else I can understand people trying to justify, but this part complete blows my mind. The ref announced the game was over, then they decided that it wasn't and they want to review a play. Is there a cut off for how long after the game is declared over that they can change their mind and review a play? Can they interrupt a post game press conference and tell the coach he needs to report to the field because they have decided to review the last play? What happens if Dooley takes the team to the locker room and refuses to come back onto the field since the game had been declared over?

This...

I was telling everyone at my house if I was Dooley I would have said you declared the game over. It's over. My team and myself are headed to the locker room. If they wanted to forfeit us then so be it.

Like I said earlier, I counted. There were easily 12.

There were 15....FIFTEEN..men on the field for UNC...Totally blown call by the refs....And yes, it did qualify for Illegal Participation and should have been 15 yd penalty...Vols got robbed!!!!!!!

Players running on the field to the sidelines and vice versa while the ball is snapped. Shouldn't there be a false start and then after the penalty was called the clock proceed to run? I don't remember if anyone for unc was moving or not but still.

see the thread about too many players on the field. There's photo and video evidence of how badly the call was botched. They had:

Illegal participation
false start
illegal shift
illegal formation (QB under center with Kicker and Holder in kick formation)

And also if a team gets a blatant penalty like that at the end of a game shouldn't the game be over or there be a fifteen yard penalty or personal foul or something?
