So, Arkansas goes 4-8 under Bret Bielama in 2017 and they fire him after 5 seasons and a 29-34 record.

That same year, Tennessee fires Butch Jones for going 4-8 after 5 seasons and a 34-29 record.

Arkansas then hires Chad Morris and proceeds to go 2-10 and then 2-10 again. He doesn't even last two seasons in Fayettnam. He becomes the only Arkansas coach to never win an SEC game. By the way, if your keeping score Tennessee has NEVER gone 2-10, let alone 2-10 TWICE in a row.

In that same period of time Tennessee has a 2 year head start building it's program under a defensive mastermind who has stops at Bama, Georgia and FSU under his belt. While Arkansas is going 2-10, Tennessee went 5-7 and 8-5 with a bowl victory

In 2018 and 2019, Tennessee has recruiting classes ranked #20 and #13 nationally compared to Arkansas at #60 and #20 according to Rivals.

So, based on overall recruiting, win/loss record and head coaching experience a reasonable person would argue that in 2020 the situation at Tennessee would be remarkably better than at Arkansas, right? I mean Tennessee has never been as low as Arkansas was and our coach is in year 3.

Arkansas then goes and hires a guy who has never been a head coach, in fact he was never even an offensive coordinator. He goes and gets a re-tread QB for 2020. So basically the head coach is brand new to being a head coach and the QB has never played in his system before.

Tennessee has a QB who has been in the football program THIS ENTIRE TIME we are talking about (since 2017). So he should be a seasoned leader, right? He's faced lots of adversity and overcome it all and learned and grown from it? And he has one of the best OCs in the country for the second straight year? Oh and Tennessee has a 4* QB sitting on the bench to back him up.

OK OK, I got it. So Tennessee is going to destroy Arkansas? Not so fast my friend! Arkansas BEAT Tennessee by 2 scores. In fact they SHUT THEM OUT in the second half and scored 24 points in ONE QUARTER on the defensive mastermind.

So, what doesn't add up here? I've done the math three times and it does not add up to Tennessee getting curb stomped by a second-rate football program that has been through a way worse situation than Tennessee ever has.

Pittman appears to be a better head coach than Pruitt by a significant margin. We just simply did not know how good of a head coach Pittman was going to be before this season because he’d never done it before. He also hired a much better coaching staff than Pruitt, especially at the coordinator spots. Pruitt just doesn’t seem like that intelligent of a guy, especially as a head coach in the SEC. Last year was probably our peak under Pruitt in terms of wins. It will probably only get worse from here as recruiting drops off and the players give up on him.

A+B+C=an incompetent UT head coach.

The math does add up...to another colossal coaching disaster by UT.

This is all speculation, but Sam Pittman probably let’s his coordinators have more control whereas Pruitt seems hellbent on trying to be Alabama circa 2009.

On another note, Kirby Smart is just Pruitt with better athletes in my opinion.

Maybe once Pruitt is fired and Smart loses his luster schools will finally stop hiring from the Saban tree. After all, to this day NONE of his assistants have beaten him.

Maybe, I'm not a Kirby fan but at least he'll try a different QB before the game is decided.

Good post except for calling Arky a second rate “program”. Both Arky and UT are considered Top 20 all time football programs.

Now if you are talking about their recent football team performance, then much like us they have truly performed second rate.

With that said, your post raises the right questions.

Pruitt created major locker room problems when he was at Georgia a few years ago under Mark Richt. Those problems were one of the reasons Mark Richt was forced to exit. Also worth noting that Kirby Smart (wisely IMO) chose not to retain Pruitt.

I'd compare Pruitt to Lane Kiffin. Pruitt is an excellent DC with a great track record on the defensive side when he can be reigned in by a strong, mature coach. As a head coach, however, his personality flaws would become a much bigger issue. Part of Mark Richt's failure his last two seasons at UGA was his inability to reign in Pruitt.

People underestimate how much of Saban's brilliance is simply being able to manage difficult personalities.

Arkansas is no second rate program. If anything we are. Many people on here said we'd know what we have in year 3. I was one of the fivers. I swear if he gets to finish his contract this football program is done. Pruitt needs to be shown the door. Seems like some guys had an inkling all along. That post I quoted above was from Oct 2017 that somebody else dug up this morning on another thread. So what ain't adding up here you say? I say it's an attitude problem that comes right from the top.

Pruitt is also known as a micromanager who is abrasive and difficult to work for. This is probably why we have had so much staff turnover.

Offensive scheme with a slow QB who doesn't have good field vision is 95% of the problem. No tight end, not even an attempt at a screen pass in like forever. A fast QB who can get to the edge and be creative will allow receivers to adjust, etc.......Which means the players are being schooled wrong from get go. Chaney is limited and his only game is to use huge linemen and run, run, run and every DC in the conference knows it. How long can the fans take the shat show? I'll watch if HB starts. That's a sign that we've got a head coach with a few brain cells left. Next move after that should be an entire overhaul of the offense. Get out the check book and no excuses!!!

It adds up perfectly if you look at who Pruitt actually beat during those two seasons and the fact that Arkansas is in the SEC west. If we had to play LSU, Texas A & M, Auburn, and the Mississippi schools every year to go along with Alabama and two east opponents I can assure ten losses would have been more than possible

I support keeping Pruitt so long as he agrees to hiring new coaches on the offensive side of the ball. Firing him now means you're losing a great recruiting class and setting the program back once again. The job of offensive coordinator given the presence of talent on that side of the ball is a great job. Should be able to bring in top notch talent to coach these boys up.

GA's QBs looked as bad as ours yesterday

It’s really not hard to figure out. The entire fortunes of this program were based on the play of Jarett Guarantano. He is inept as a team leader and in general as a football player. His terrible performance has affected the entirety of the team and caused the defense to be on the field too long in every game that was played this season.

This is ultimately Pruitt‘s fault for starting him last season, and then starting him again this season when he knew what he had at the quarterback position.

If Pruitt was any type of executive decision making coach, he would’ve started Harrison Bailey from the beginning of the season and gotten experience. Instead he started in NFL quarterback and it’s about to cost him his job.

Pruitt tried to hire Hugh.. Our AD blocked it.

I was a volunteer assistant HS coach in the Memphis area in the past and know a couple of the Briarcrest coaches who are still close to Freeze today. Take this for what's it worth:

Fulmer was concerned about the optics (especially after Schiano Sunday) but Freeze was willing to bet on himself at Liberty rather than take OC at Auburn ( would Gus give him control) and UT (offensive philosophy and personality differences).

If I'm a defense I'm selling out against the run game and think the only way JG beat you is with a perfect long ball which he can't hit often enough.

This sounds a little similar to something I had heard back when all this started before he took Liberty job. If this is true, we have a major problem higher up and a coach unwilling to change and let his hires do their jobs.

Idk, but we're about to see history made. Tennessee will likely finish with only 2 wins.
