The Runner's thread

And it is precisely why I will be doing it again next year. You don't see many plus sized girls doing 5ks. All of em fit almost.

Indeed. I chased a girl for 8 miles yesterday. She was a better runner than I, however. Never caught her.

There are sometimes plus sized girls, but unless you're plus sized yourself then you don't see them at all, or for long.

4 miles on Sunday. Plan on doing 3-4 every other day and doing 5 on weekends. I would like to do 5 regularly during the month of May.

June will be 6 miles. Come July 4 I'll be sailin.

Aavoxx, nice time for your first half. One of my co-workers ran it. She beat you, her sister-in-law beat you by a lot.

2 hours 7 minutes for the Nashville half...That's my worst half marathon time that I have ever recorded... :sigh:

Right there with you, ran a 1:53 on Sat. My worst half... ran 4 minutes slower than Knoxville just 4 weeks earlier. I consider Knoxville's course a good bit hillier. Not making excuses, just a crappy race on my part.

I was looking for a comparison between the two from someone who had actually ran them. I was curious. Thank you, sir.

I am curious if any of yall runners have ever used an elliptical machine? What is every ones opinion about it? Does it produce results?

Did you start using it to help lose weight, or just because running only was bad on your knees?

Well I started running period to get in shape. I use the elliptical when I go over to my parents place as a nice way to rest my body without having to sacrifice a day of exercise.

Now 4 years ago, I lost a lot of weight using the elliptical alone.

Depends. Why are you wanting to use the elliptical?

There are two types of conditioning you need for long-distance running, cardio and musculoskeletal. You're getting the cardio on the elliptical, but not the muskuloskeletal.

When I first started running, my cardio conditioning was well ahead of my legs, and if you're the same, you may be able to get some rest so you don't overdo it on your legs. But don't cut out actual running. If you do, that elliptical is going to do you no good.

I personally hate both treadmills and ellipticals simply because they're boring.

I started two weeks ago simply to try and lose weight. That is my main goal. I use the machine for 30 mins a day, then go jog/power walk a mile. What do you suggest simply for weight loss purposes?

For weight loss the elliptical is tremendously effective. Although by the minute I burn more calories running. But if I had an elliptical in my apartment, I probably wouldn't run half as much as I do.

Yeah I feel like I get more out of running but I really like the elliptical. After using the elliptical today on a high resistance level I attempted jogging a mile. About half way through my calves was so tight they was actually hurting. Had to slowly walk the rest of the way home.
