The Runner's thread

Got six miles to run after work today, if the weather permits. Kind of nervous about this distance as this will be the longest distance I have ran at one time. I have ran through out most of my life but not this long of a distance. I hope the weather clears up so I can make this attempt. Even though I nervous, I am excited to challenge my body and mind to over come this distance. Wish me luck, cause I am gonna need it. I will post my time probably Monday

When running short distances what type of rest is right for you when training for a 5k?

Short rest between hard and fast intervals can teach the nervous system to adjust to faster running, promote stride power, and allow you to practice maintaining form and speed. 30 second rest
Do this a month before an import racing block

Medium rest promotes, develops, and supports the specific endurance necessary for racing a hard 5k. Keeping the rest at a medium duration lets you accumulate substantial amount of volume but doesn't afford a complete recovery.60-90 seconds on a 10k pace
This is best to do 6 weeks before a target 5k

Long rest allows you to focus on the quality of your run not the quality 10k pace 5 min rest
You want to use this workout in early-mid running season for yourself (the reason for yourself is added is because running is a year round sport)
Do you wear your orange suit when you run? Does it make you more aerodynamic?

Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you can do it. :)

I'm leary of my workout tomorrow. Last week my heart rate was pretty elevated by the time I was done. Not sure what an acceptable upper limit is exactly.

Tomorrow it calls for this:

00:00-5:00: Warmup walk
5:00-10:00: Run
10:00-13:00: Walk
13:00-18:00: Run
18:00-21:00: Walk
21:00-26:00: Run
26:00-30:00: Cooldown Walk

Last week it was this:
00:00-5:00: Warmup walk
5:00-8:00: Run
8:00-9:30: Walk
9:30-14:30: Run
14:30-17:00: Walk
17:00-20:00: Run
20:00-21:30: Walk
21:30-26:30: Run
26:30-30:00: Cooldown Walk

Not a huge difference. I've had the treadmill set on 3 mph walking and 4 mph running. (If I wasn't running or jogging, I'd be at 3.5-3.8 with varying inclines the whole time.)

Any advice or suggestions?

Perhaps 15-20 min of elastic band Orr strict form concentration weights then work up to run or do do one cycle of three to four sets weights then one mile run in cycles wiil keep a higher heart rate without getting to the higher bpm seen when doing straight cardio might help? Lots of women at my gym do this. Lift then run as a superset

Good suggestion

Exactly what my wife does

This morning was fine. 102% was the highest it go, at that was at the end of the last five minute run.

My strength training usually runs for about an hour. I do it on alternate days. It's low weight and high rep circuit training.

Finished my six miles on Saturday after work in 45 mins and 53 sec. I had a hard time with my fourth mile for some reason but pushed through and the fifth and sixth miles weren't as hard. I am not gonna say they were easy but they weren't as hard as the fourth. I looked at my times per mile and they were pretty consistant which is what I am going for. My average min per mile was 7:36. Now that's over it's on to the rest of this week and then this coming Saturday will be eight miles.

Long slow distance for me yesterday. I wonder why so many are averse to running in the rain.... I actually enjoy it so long as it isn't really cold. Bumping up the mileage over the next two weeks and then start the taper for my half marathon Feb. 18th.

I would kill for a time like that!! I haven't broken two hours yet in a half marathon but I really believe I'm going to get it this time.

Where are you running at on Feb 18?

I have never gotten below two hours in an official half so I am doing a half at lease every other weekend so I can get well below that in Nashville

I'm doing the Berry half marathon in Rome Georgia. I've done it the past two years. Berry college has an unbelievable campus. Largest college campus in the world I believe....

You need to go to a shoe store such as fleet feet. (located in Nashville) have them determine what kind of runner you are (under-pronated, over-pronated, or neutral) if you have any pronation in your stride they will recommend a shoe that can correct that.

I am a neutral runner and like light shoes, but don't want a completely minimalist shoe. I love Saucony brand. I have the Saucony Kinvara 2. They are supposed to come out with a 3 in the spring that is supposed to be lighter.

2 Brand weight is 7.7 oz.
3 Brand weight is expected to be around 7.2 (not confirmed)

Just found out the three isn't coming out till June

I can't wait. Got to buy another pair of 2's

Five miles last night in 37:58. My longer distances are getting easier to finish. I feel like this training program is working well for me. We will see on Saturday with eight miles to run

4.5 miles on high school cross country course. 8:30 mile pace. Probably slow for you rabbits but darn quick for me. :)

I started going to Hard Exercise Works....so no running for me right now. Pretty brutal workouts, i'm finished day 3 tonight.

I'm gonna have to bail on the running. It's just not my thing. I wanna move with the music, in my own direction.
