You know your body better than any of us. Most of us love to push ourselves to our limit. Do you have any health reasons not to? Do you even want to? What are your goals that you want to accomplish? Health? 5k? 10k? Half marathon? Lose weight? Just to get out?
A lot of these answers will determine the type and amount of training you do.
Those are all good questions. The simple answer is I want to run to get into better shape. Back in the day, cross country came very easy to me, but not so much anymore. I miss the mental side of running -- being alone with your thoughts on a long run -- but the physical part of running is something I'm having a time with. I turn 40 this year and have slightly creaky knees from my years of running in my teens and twenties.
I'm not in terrible shape, but not in running shape. I think a structured plan or regiment will help me focus and get past the initial hurdles where your body is saying "Man, do you really want to do this?" I need to somehow switch the mental conversation away from doubt to more encouragement.
Depending on how it goes, I'd like to run a 5k maybe by late summer or fall. I'm realistic enough to keep my goals at (a) better shape and (b) possible 5k, right now.
Today I downloaded the couch to 5k program and reading over it.
Hopefully over the weeks, you'll hear back from me that I've made it over the hump and back into some kind of running routine.

Best thing that works for me is sign up for a race. The $30 will make you commit. Tell everyone you are going to do it. positive peer pressure will motivate you.
if you don't feel like running make a deal tp go out for 10 minutes then decide. more often you'll feel better and finish the run.
I need to sign up for a race. It's been way too long.
