The Runner's thread

4.68 miles tonight. 35.43 min. Running most the time with a little walking mixed in. I just started running. I really like it. I used to smoke but quit in September and I feel this will defiantly help me never want to smoke again. My fiancé signed us both up for a 5k next month, any tips or advice? Never ran in any organized event in my life except school.

If you are already running/walking 4.68 miles you really don't need anything for the 5k. The only suggestion I could think of would be to cut your running down to 3.2 miles (5k) and try to run the whole distance. Congrats on quiting smoking. If you love running then it would be something that would probably help you stay quit. Good luck in your 5k

Pre run the course a week or two in advance.
Get in line for the bathroom early.
Don't get in the front unless you have a legit shot at winning.
Jog 10-15 minutes before the race to warm up.
Have fun.

5 mile tempo run. Virgin run on a new trail they built near my house.

jealous. I think they've managed to pave every inch of non-farmland in my area. And I moved here from Portland, OR which has the nicest w/in the city limits trail network I've ever seen.

I would also add to consciously manage your pace at the start. Don't let the moment get you committed to a faster pace early on which is quite easy to do if you're not used to the atmosphere.

Very good point!! Happened to me in my 5k and my half marathon. Don't try to out run anyone in the begining because everyone is hyped up and they will weed out. Just stick to your normal pace and finish strong.

5K last night in 21:35. Believe the milder temps and no wind helped, even with the wet pavement. Plan is 6 miles on Sat before some afternoon golf :)

5.8 this morning on one of my favorite routes. It's roughly half trail, half road, decent hills but nothing crazy and I get to run by three golf holes twice. Also you Iron Mike around the Iron Mike Statue at the turn around point.

Love this valley. Over 100 miles of trails within 30 minutes of my house. Where you live?

I've been running on McFee Rd in Farragut. Park at the playground and the roundabouts are exactly 1 mile apart. Relatively flat with enough elevation to make it challenging. Sidewalks back and forth. I've seen deer both evenings. Running again tomorrow.

:good!: Sounds like things are getting a little easier for you. Good luck.

Thanks. Its a 4 mile loop. Group run for the first lap or two should make it a little easier.

I know several people that run but for some reason can never get together a group run. I have tried a road run, a trail run and a mix of the two and it has just never worked out.

Ive tried and its tough. only been able to be successful a couple of times with friends. fortunately there is a strong running community here and they created a Facebook page. people can post runs if they want others to join them. plus a couple of guys have organized trail runs they post every week with no runner left behind. I've only done a few but it is a nice change of pace.

I am going to have to search the Chattanooga area for something like this. I am sure they have something similar.

I ran in college at UTC back in the early-mid 90s and they have a nice running community with several groups that you should be able to find something that works for you.

I'm in what they call East Central Indiana. Extremely flat, void of sidewalks, and every 'trail' is either paved or concrete. There is actually a decent active community here so it could be worse.
