The Rod Wilks thread (merged)

Okay, so Rod Wilks walks into a bar.........

How about this, instead of whining about what everyone else does, when you see a Rod Wilks post, DON'T read it. Crazy idea I know.

Imagine peole not crying about what someone else does. If they weren't funny, people would stop posting them. Some are better than others. Some of them are horribly unfunny. But most are pretty entertaining.

As someone pointed out, they are kind of lame when they're just Chuck Norris jokes rebranded. But every once in a while, someone will throw in a really good one that makes me laugh, so they haven't worn out their welcome for me yet :)

That would be great, if people would put it in a Rod Wilks thread. But when you are reading something for information and one person brings up RW, you have to read through 30 more stupid jokes before the thread might go back on topic.

ding ding ding!

It would be interesting to see how many of the current RW jokesters actually knew this thing actually started out just to make fun of him, Smyrna and a certain all-things-Smyrna loving VN poster.

I didn't really know they were intended to make fun of Wilks, or the town of Smyrna, but from what I gathered was that it was really just to make fun of the guy who came on the board during Wilks' recruitment hyping him up like he was essentially the second-coming of Christ.

Exactly. Whether the topic is LBs, secondary, Dline, Oline, backs, qb, receivers or ST, RW gets mentioned and it either kills the actual topic or it's 60 posts before it can come back. You just can't avoid them even if you are trying.

I wonder if the guy is still around? If so, someone should thank him for all of the fun he has created on this board.

He was here before RW and he's still here.

Well, not so much to make fun of Rod Wilks, but you are right on the other points.

Every now and then someone comes up with a new joke that makes me giggle though. Imagine what will happen if he earns a starting position and has a good year.

Fair enough. There actually is a Rod Wilks thread (http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-football/63771-rod-wilks-thread-merged.html), and maybe people who want to joke about that can just post there jokes in there, and leave the actual football discussion in the other threads. I wasn't on board when the OP said all RW talk should just stop completely, because it is funny every now and then, people should just post their jokes in the appropriate location. (Which we all know will never happen)

Eric looked larger than last year and was wearing a t-shirt that said "Beast".
Wilks gave that shirt to Berry.
Wilks had no use for it after he had it tattooed permanently on him.
No, that story has been misconstrued. The truth is that "BEAST" is one of his birthmarks.
Actually, Rod Wilks is the shirt. He owns the trademark "Beast" and is everything associated with it.

all from within the first 10 posts in a thread about Eric Berry....

If last season hadn't been crap they may have fizzled out. By the time we had anything to be excited about the jokes had taken a life of their own.

After spring practice, it's going to be a LONG summer. We can look forward to lots of RW jokes, and lots of uniform discussion.

Okay, fellas, it's official: I'm tired of the Rod Wilks jokes. Can we place a moratorium on them? They have been so overused that they aren't funny anymore. And they unnecessarily slander Mr. Wilks's character. I don't think we should allow our desire to be humorous come at the expense of this young man any longer.

They're only slightly more annoying than every recruit being compared to a former USC star.

Smyrna boy led us all to believe Wilks was the second coming and would be an AA as a true frosh. I think there was some ribbing at RW just for the overhype he was receiving.

It is just a shame that Smyrna boy is too wrapped up with all of his sons' nursing careers to continue his illustrious thread starting career.

Since some of you have mentioned it, let me clarify what I meant when I said the Rod Wilks jokes slander his character. Not everyone knows how this whole thing got started and that these jokes are aimed more at the poster from Smyrna than they are at Mr. Wilks himself. Those folks can much more easily take the jokes to mean that Rod Wilks is an arrogant little punk who is being ridiculed for his cocky attitude. They don't come across like we are acknowledging his great abilities, but more like we are ridiculing his ego. That's how I often took the jokes before I came to realize how the whole thing got started. I hope this helps clarify what I meant. On another note, I do also agree with the above posters who have said how it is sometimes difficult to find the substance in a thread because of the Rod Wilks rabbit trails. Actually, that Eric Berry thread is what finally led me to start this thread.

No one is or ever was slandering his ego or attitude, just the fact that a certain someone overhyped him in dramatic fashion.
