The Rock/Metal Thread

I remember when that Pantera album came out. I went to East Town mall (when it was safe) and went to Camelot I think it was called. They had listening stations with headphones where you could listen to new releases. I was browsing their decent metal section and this little black kid kept yelling like he was super excited and shocked at the same time. Found my Pantera CD and as I was walking by the kid I saw he was listening to the new Pantera and kept repeating the beginning of The Great Southern Trendkill. Too funny.

Was the first Pantera album I owned; arguably their most brutal. Funny story related:

I worked at a Christian coffee house in college; back around the time mp3's were just getting big and Napster was all the jam.

The owner setup a cyber cafe and we'd play easy listening music for patrons during lunch... I hated most of the stuff Jim played, but there was one song in particular that REALLY got under my skin. Of course, this was Jim's favorite song. (I don't remember the exact artist but think "Indigo Girls" music...)

One day, I'd had enough of this song and decided to take action. I downloaded track 1 of The Great Southern Trendkill, the one that starts off with Phil going from 1 to 11.... "ughAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"!!!

I deleted Jim's garbage and renamed GSTK to the offending song's name. My trap was set :naughty:

It went off right in the middle of the lunch crowd the next day; old stuffy businessmen and women getting a double dose of Pantera - much to the horror of my boss

I denied any involvment but everyone who worked there knew it was me

Awesome!
I think Far Beyond Driven was the most brutal. I remember my friend Josh bringing the album to school and we acted like it was the holy grail of bad ass music. The Bottles and Pills song had most of us going wtf..

I love blasting that song nowadays.

Slaughtered was my favorite.

Far beyond driven was a great album. They were an amazingly talented band. I liked the cover of planet caravan. I remember buying far beyond driven and Slayer seasons in the abyss on the same day. Seasons in the abyss is still to this day my favorite slayer album. Every song on Far beyond and seasons were good, never had to skip any of them.

That Planet Caravan cover was a great way to end that album. FBD is a masterpiece. Seasons in the Abyss is great too. War Ensemble and Dead Skin Mask are amazing tunes. I think Divine Intervention is my favorite Slayer album, with Seasons tied for second place with South of Heaven. I prefer Paul Bostaph's playing to Lombardo's.

Bostaph is a brutal drummer. I seen them on the diabolus in musica tour with Clutch and system of a down in Cincinnati OH. Slayer destroyed that place! I know it must suck to have to open for a band like that! Lol, Long story short. Diabolus is my favorite with bostaph. I love Stain of Mind and Bitter peice. That night i seen slayer, They played chemical warfare and they faded into Ghosts of war. The pits were insane!! Seats were torn up from the floors,Broken noses! Lol, the craziest show i have ever been to.

Just picked up the new vinyl edition of this the other day. I still think this is their best album!

I can take or leave that vocal ability. I do think it just darkens the shadow cast by the guitar work. I dont know, I am a big Death Chuck Schuldiner fan! He had a "Gutteral" vocal presentation that was unheard-of. Leprosy and Scream bloody Gore are classic albums! Chuck Billy from Testament doesn't get the love he deserves either. Hell,Testament as a band hasn't gotten the love they deserve. Chuck's ability to change from growling to an actual singer is amazing. He does it Live to which is more impressive! Lol. My "Big 4" would have been. Metallica,Slayer,Testament,Anthrax. Megadeth does nothing for me. To much politics! I did like Rust in peice though! Friedman and Mustain were awsome together.

If anyone doesn't belong on the Big 4 list it is Anthrax. They should be replaced by Exodus.

Also, it was amazing how Chuck Schuldiner's death vocals were different from everyone else's. He was a true genius.

I agree 100% on Exodus! I will say, I wish they would have kept Rob Dukes as the singer! My favorite album from exodus is Shovel Headed Kill Machine. Man! I wish the vols would come out to Deathamphetamine and have the circle of life to that song! Lol, i dig that whole album no doubt!! I even liked Rob remake of "let there be blood" i thought he was an awsome stage presence for Exodus!

I was driving around listening to some good metal..and Volbeat came on..I know their guitarist is from Anthrax..then I started thinking what Anthrax has done that was memorable..and I came up with nothing.

Try as I might, I just cannot get into these kinds of vocals. The music kicks ass but this kind of "singing" ruins it for me.

This is the band that got me into the rough vocals..even though this is a recent song..

Man, Amorphis blew my mind the first time I heard them. Elegy is such a brilliant album and it doesn't sound like any other melodic death metal band. They really have their own style.

This song still gets me pumped up.
