The Rock/Metal Thread

Hmm, I'd disagree with the Metallica. I feel like I hear mostly Black album, Load, or Reload. I'd actually like to hear more old stuff from them. And to my earlier point of Korn, doesn't it all sound like whatever album it was released on is irrelevant because it all sounds the same? That's how I feel about them, Godsmack, 5FDP, Disturbed, etc.

I was in Nashville this past weekend and wasn't in my car enough to listen to much, but I did listen to a bit of Lightning 100 and 102.9 the Buzz. Do you live there? If so, what is your preference between the two stations, and why? I'm just kind of curious about today's rock music and listening habits. Knoxville's has been kinda all over the place for the past few years, and I know both those stations have been in place in Nashville for quite some time.

The radio situation in Nashville isn't great. 102.9 is the best if you want to hear hard rock/heavy metal but it's not nearly as good as it used to be. Lightning 100 says they are more "progressive rock" but in reality they are more folksy than anything now. They are pretty much the hipster radio station in town and while they play some stuff I like, generally they are a bit too soft for my tastes.

Now back to 102.9, about 5-6 years ago they were pretty good. They would play straight rock, everything from G'N'R, Metallica, 90s grunge, the latest hard rock and metal. Then they decided to take on the classic rock station (105.9) and started throwing in more classic rock. Which was in some ways cool but some of what they played seemed a bit out of place. They've scaled back some of it but you can still hear Zeppelin, Van Halen, Aerosmith, etc.

But then about 2 years ago they decided "Hey we need to take some of that sweet hipster market" and started playing a lot of what Lightning 100 played. It had a mixed reception, as some liked it but a lot of people didn't like that they were trying to be like 100. Now they are closer back to what they were 5-6 years ago but still IMHO play too much hipster stuff.

As far as the groups, they are the ones that play mostly older Metallica, a lot of Black Album, and not much after. The only ones I hear regularly after TBA is Fuel, King Nothing, and Turn the Page. Around St. Patrick's Day they'll play Whiskey in the Jar.

I agree about a lot of groups sounding the same. I'm partial to Disturbed because they are one of my favorite groups and I think they grew some out of the nu metal phase to more of an "alternative metal" type sound, but I'll agree a lot of their stuff sounds the same. But I'm not one that thinks sounding the same is necessarily a bad thing. Chevelle is one of my favorite groups too and they've sounded the same for almost 20 years now.

I still wish 102.9 would play more metal and different bands. Like Mastodon, I've never heard one song of theirs on the radio here, and I think they're awesome.

This was 1999 Incubus..before they became famous. I remember a bunch white dudes with dreads..banging on bongos...and getting booed.

I remember them being like that. I think they played Ozzfest around then. It's like they couldn't decide if they wanted to be a metal band, a rap metal band, or something else altogether. It took them a while to find their identity.

they did. I saw them at Ozzfest.

I hear multiple Pantera songs on the radio. Obviously the best radio friendly ones I have heard songs from Cowboys From Hell to Reinventing The Steel.

Is this on terrestrial radio? I could see Cowboys From Hell, but anything other than that or Walk and I assume you're listening to satellite radio.

I only hear Panetra on 102.9 sometimes late at night or overnight and it's almost always Walk. They used to do a Headbangers Ball type show on Sundays and they'd play stuff like This Love and Hollow.

To be fair, the rock radio situation everywhere (except Orlando, from what FLVOL79 is saying) doesn't seem to be great. Just found out last week that my old boss was let go from the station he's been at for 15 years. And from my understanding there's not one single local personality on that station anymore, everything is automated...all day long.

It's a weird world in radio right now. Everyone has an opinion on what should be played, but with so many different avenues to consume whatever you want to hear, it's tough to stay profitable when your listeners continue to find other means. You just have to cast your net wide enough to catch enough people that spend money in the places that attract corresponding advertisers, without alienating listeners with polarizing music. The whole game is to keep people from changing the channel, which is why so many stations play music people are already familiar with.

Was it Full Metal Jackie, by chance? That's a syndicated show out of LA.

Here in Orlando Pantera is commonplace during the day on 101.1.

Man, they must give their DJ's a lot of freedom. From the research I've done, the only song I'm seeing that they have in their regular catalog from Pantera is Walk.

Mediabase 24/7 - WJRR-FM Station Playlist Request

It's a Clear Channel/iHeartRadio station, aka the original evil of all radio broadcasting corporations. I worked for that company for 3.5 years and lemme tell you, they follow a very strict blueprint, which was incredibly frustrating as I did all the scheduling of the station's daily logs. That said, Orlando is a larger market (33) than I worked in when working for them (88). Maybe they still let them have fun, though I have a hard time believing it with that company. I've found 22 known Active Rock stations in the iHeartRadio umbrella, all of the stations websites look identical (minus the station logo), 5 share the same midday personality (meaning it's all prerecorded), 3 share another, 8 appear to have local DJ's, and another 6 don't have anything listed (maybe it's all music in the midday with no DJ's), so 14 of the 22 potentially don't have anyone in the studio to play anything other than what was already scheduled.

Count yourself lucky if that company actually gives the DJ's in your market the freedom to deviate from the playlist.

It's.....ok.....sounds like a song that didn't make Death Magnetic

...that it does. I like it though.

Lars said the new album has more dynamics, which that song is lacking. Decent song though. Looks like they're releasing a double album, so hopefully it's pretty diverse.

Now that you mention it Walk is probably the only Pantera song I actually do hear. But the only time I listen to regular radio is when I am at work driving around which isn't often.

The drum sound isn't terrible, about all the positive I can say about that.

I dig it. It does sound like it belongs on DM, which certainly isn't a bad thing. At least they seemed to have left "Pop Metal" behind and are sticking to the sound that made them Metallica...

SIAP - as this is fairly old...Not metal but an amazing blues Pantera cover of "The Great Southern Tread Kill" by the Bailey Hounds.

I remember when that Pantera album came out. I went to East Town mall (when it was safe) and went to Camelot I think it was called. They had listening stations with headphones where you could listen to new releases. I was browsing their decent metal section and this little black kid kept yelling like he was super excited and shocked at the same time. Found my Pantera CD and as I was walking by the kid I saw he was listening to the new Pantera and kept repeating the beginning of The Great Southern Trendkill. Too funny.
