What if he flops again this season? Does anyone think that he might come back and give football a try?

Here are Kelly's stats from this past season in Rookie A and High A ball:

He did show improvement at high-A at Lowell but his overall stats are not good. Would Kiffin extend the same scholly that Fulmer offered to this kid last year? He was one of the top rated pro-style QBs coming out of HS last year.

i wouldn't say he was one of the "TOP RATED" pro-style QBs coming out of high school.

He was an average 3* type guy with a positive upside. He's not anything like what we're gearing toward, in terms of our new coaching staff.

They have made it clear that they're not going after marginal players anymore -- they're trying to get badasses.

Not to be a jerk, but unless you've experienced minor league baseball first hand you have no idea what type of an adjustment Kelly is going through. Here are a few facts for any concerned:

Lowell is the Reds Short Season affiliate not an Advanced Level A team. Dayton is Low A and Sarasota is High A, where former Vol Sean Watson started last year. In reference to whether or not he flops this year, understand the investment the Reds have made in him >$1 mil.

The transition from metal to wood, the transition from kid to adult, the transition from mom and dad to life on a bus is nothing to sneeze at. The soonest we'd see him (if he were to fizzle out) would be another 3 years from now.

Oh yeah, and if he can't hit, they'll put him on the mound. He topped out at 95mph as a high school senior.

I played professionally so take it for what it's worth.

The GCL isn't a league full of "grown men."

To the original point of the thread, 130 ABs for a kid's first 1/4 year in the minors is a ridiculously small sample size and won't tell you anything.

New to here. The Rod Wilks things is funny. If I may add to the pitch to himself... he hit a grand slam with the bases empty.

I understand the sport. I have followed it for 35 years. I do see where his stats improved while in the NY-Penn league. I understand that he was a number one pick by the BoSox. I also recall: Chris Weinke, Pat White, Kenny Kelly, all quarterbacks who played pro baseball and then went on to QB in the college. The question I posed was just drawing some inference from these same type of examples of IF CASEY KELLY FLOPS not WHEN he flops. This thread is no more pointless than the discussions of how cool black jerseys would look or what Ed Orgeron dips for a caffeine rush.

As far as his football rating being 3 star- I believe he was 4 star before an injury and was about 7th ranked pro-style going into his senior year. I doubt CLK would give him the time of day though. I think he has his sights set on the very elite QBs.

Got me, absolutely right. My road roommate my first year of pro ball was a trade from the Lowell Spinners (Boston affiliate). Sorry, I got caught up in the typical know everything but know nothing type of post I had read.
