That is real question. What the detailed, technical definition of possession?

They often use the word "control" as well.

If the two are interchangeable, he clearly lost control before the ball crossed the plane. Objectively (which is hardly popular in this case) he lost control. "Control" would mean that he could do as he wished with the football. It doesn't simply mean in contact with. Once the ball separated from from his palm, there was no way he could have returned the ball to his body or otherwise controlled it. He was not in possession of it. He was simply touching it.

In Possession
Rule 2-1-5 “In possession means the holding or controlling of a live ball or a ball to be free-kicked. It may refer either to player possession or team possession.

I really do hate it for those players. They played their guts out, but the lost the game. It really is that simple. Whining and griping about the officiating just makes the fans look like a bunch of bratty children.

The only real disappointment for me was that it was a 2nd down play. If he would have simply dove with the ball remaining in his grasp, we'd had 3rd down somewhere around or maybe even inside the 1 yard line. The chances of scoring would have been pretty high.

Where was the penalty on Jones? I saw the one on Vereen and PI call. Just curious.

EDIT....Nevermind. It was at the start of the 3rd quarter.

Did not make much difference in the game but if Saban, Cryer, Muschamp, Mad Hatter, or Spurrier pull a dam knife on a ref, they don't get a penalty! :banghead2:

No it wasn't just because Verne said so doesn't mean he was right. UT player stood over the down UGA player and was yelling at him. That is taunting. Yes, those officials are not the best in the league but that call was the right call.

They know the rules and had plenty of time to review. Pig possessed the football reaching the plane while turning the nose of the ball out and let go. Touchdown! NOT one shred of evidence, much less 'indisputable evidence' exists showing he lost possession before the plane. Fingers and thumb on ball, no separation... That's robbery in plain sight. No excuse to overturn from the booth.

You have to be kidding right? That same call will be made 100% of the time no matter who's playing, college or pro.
