The Recruitment of Jalen Ramsey

So he picked USC in part for the melting pot experience? Seems like a reach. USC is only 5% black but no matter which school he picked, the majority of the people he will be associating with (football players) are black. Most likely he is just a kid that wants to experience life in Southern California. And play on a team loaded with talent.

I'm sure a lot of things come into play. The weather, Cali, kiffin, the aura around USC, etc. But for you to say a 75% minority school may not influence a minority kid who has been at a 10% minority hs is a little naive. I coached high schoolers for a few years and you wouldn't believe what all comes into play when deciding.

Amazing how some of you Columbo's in here get your jollies off on feeling the need to crack the case on who is an insider and who is not. Some of these guys may have good information. But we will never see ir for two long because we have way too many posters who shoot for popularity on an anonymous internet message board. Congrats, may your lives be officially fulfilled.

difference being kiffin gets great athletes and wins games. dooley gets ok talent and loses. pretty simple to most of the football world that are not blinded by orange colored glasses.

Nice assessment for 2 guys with limited coaching experience. Guess it has nothing to do with what they each inherited.

He's good. No doubt about it. I know he didn't want to come to Tennessee , but that doesn't take away the fact that the kid can flat out play. It would have been nice to get him to Tennessee , but knowing what he was going to do sort of made it to where it doesn't really bother me. It's his choice. I did find it funny that a friend of mine who is an SC fan (has been all his life) said that the SC fans were dissapointed that we weren't that upset about it. He said they had fans on their board who knew nothing about him. Just wanted to get him to see if it would upset the fan base. Even he thought that was a bit pathetic.

Cali people are mad because we don't experience rolling blackouts.

Having lived in the neighborhood this is not true.

He had 3 great schools on his final list. He would have been privileged to have attended any of them. Can we leave this kind of make-believe crap out of it?

Sorry if I struck a nerve but if you believe that the area surrounding USC and the area surrounding Brentwood Academy are similar you are the one living in the land of the make-believe. USC is a great school but the neighborhood surrounding it is horrible and has been for years. The last time I was there was 2008. Perhaps it has changed 100% since then but I doubt it.

Not trying to start an argument, and congrats on the kids (have fun with that tab each year!), but USC's race demographic is probably close to 70% minority, if not more. It is a true melting pot. I'd say BA's is maybe 10.

Actually, I just checked. Minority makes up 10% and there are about 60 black kids at BA out of almost 800.

And I see a Blaze jersey, I believe. Just around the corner. Good luck against Smyrna and Donelson!

Good point. I was thinking more along the lines of the socio-economic make-up of the campus as opposed to racial mix. I missed your point the first time.

The Blaze are no no longer affiliated with TYFA so no Smyrna and Donelson on the schedule this year. We are now part of the TNYFL along with the Cowboys and several other area programs.

Still streching. The school is 41% whites, 23% asians, 14% latinos and 12% international students. He's a minority again with <5%. He may want the melting pot experience but I highly doubt that had anything to do with it. He wants the socal experience.

I want to say Tennessee is like 82% White... but I'm not completely sure

Over reacting by realizing that worrying about why this kid went west is pointless. He is 17 or so and thinks he knows what he wants.

Think of it like this... your dad advises you to get the safe economical car but you choose the gas guzzler with no warranty sold to you by a guy that has a poor reputation. Why worry about it, there was nothing to be done.

I could care less about where he went. I thought that was clear in the post. As a competitor I would lose sleep about losing. It wouldn't matter if I lost to Franklin, Kif, Saban, Richt or Muschamp. I wouldn't be happy. It isn't worry...it is the feeling of losing.

maybe he does just want the football or LA experience. What I mentioned is possibly part of the factor as well.
You don't see a lot of Mexican girls, black girls and asian girls running around a place like UT compared to SoCal and the surrounding area. If that's my thing and I'm 18 with a free ride?
Hard to pass up.

I don't see why it's so hard to believe that jalen just wanted to leave the state of tn and play in cali....were there other factors..sure...but some people just don't wanna spend their whole life in the south..

Blasphemy!

I don't understand the butt-hurtedness about Ramsey committing to USC. I say good luck to the young man and let's move on.

racist IMO

Yeah I read his interview... He sounds like a kid brainwashed and to me it's just disappointing... He really doesn't understand why ppl in TN don't like Lane Kiffin?? Umm because he left us in the grass high and dry. Without any warning whatsoever. What kids don't understand is that in the real world NOBODY does that especially when they're in a high profile position of major influence. And yes it IS fair to hold those ppl to that level of expectation. Another example of this is the relationship of Lebron James with Cleveland. The thing that I dislike about him is not necessarily that he left the Cavs. It's (1) the manner in which he left- though a creating a giant media spectacle and (2) the fact that in hindsight it appears that he absolutely spent zero time thinking about the consequences and series of events that would follow. Maybe it's just me but I though LBJ seemed completely shocked that the city of Cleveland hated him when he essentially divorced the team on national television. I mean really Lebron showed, more than anything, his age and maturity level. I feel that Kiffin's actions are very similar in that they showed Kiffin's age and maturity level. HS kids don't understand this because they, in a lot of ways, they are at the same maturity level. Of course, there are exceptions but that's the rule and that's one reason why it hasn't affected Kiffin's ability to recruit and influence teenagers. The ppl that call us "haters" for doing that truly don't understand loyalty. And I just laugh because their lives are stupid.

Words like 'haters' are just easy words for people without the brain capacity to label people without truly understanding where someone is coming from. It's a lazy effort.

Yeah and it's not like I don't understand why each of them left. I get that part. It's everything else: the timing and the manner in which they left. I just felt compelled to explain that because Ramsey is a TN kid and that commitment was puzzling to say the least and then I read the interview... I wish the kid well and have no hard feelings. It's just the way I feel when I hear the name Lane Kiffin and him recruiting against us. The only reason tries to sell kids on us being a program at the bottom of the barrel is because he treated this job with that approach when he was here. Creating the media buzz? Changing everything in the complex to USC- related? He had absolutely no clue as to how UT's tradition was perceived on a national scale. He set us back a lot further than a new coach should have... I truly believe if Dooley or anybody else had been hired at that time we would be better off than we are now. Of course hindsight is 20/20...

Kiffin should be flogged as soon as he steps foot in the state. He plays the martyr role well. Starts off with the 'there is no reason to be upset with me card', all the while underminding the very university that gave him an opportunity when Al Davis bounced him on his bean out of Oakland. Amazing how even some supposed UT fans buy the bs he is shoveling about his departure here. Maybe there is a reason we get stereotyped in this area, apparently a lot of people are easily fooled.

Very well said...

He may have committed to USC in July, but let's see where he signs in February. Plenty of time and a season to play.

I lived on 24th and Hoover for a while. It's just a blue-collar neighborhood. Nothing wrong with that. The area is pretty rapidly changing: LA Live and the Figueroa corridor has had an effect and lots of new apartment building complexes to house students who want to live by campus. That shooting was tragic, though.
