The Realistic Win/Loss Expectation

In the very possible and unfortunate event that we lose tomorrow I just wanted to say ahead of time that the sky is not falling yet still. The Georgia/Alabama two game stretch was a question mark even in the off season with all the hype. There is a very real possibility that we end up being 2-5 going into the Halloween game against Kentucky. That's OK, don't bust out your pitchforks and torches, and don't turn in your VFL cards if you haven't already. Having said all of that there is a very good chance we win out the rest of the season putting us at 7-5 for regular season games. Despite how down we all may feel right now about this season that is surprisingly still an improvement on last seasons 6-6 record.

Hang in there VN! Go Vols!
Do you actually read what you type? Sure, we start out with 2 wins in the first 7 games- that is ok and guess what- we will win the next 5 in a row? Are you kidding me.

People on message boards do not represent the average fan. Most people I talk to in Knoxville, Nashville, and Chattanooga still strongly support Botch. I think 6 and 6 and beating Vandy every year is enough to keep Butch around for the duration of his contract. Losing to Vandy and not qualifying for bowl games is what got Dooley his pink slip.
So your anecdotal interaction with people who may but likely won't express their honest opinions in "polite" conversation are more representative than the thousands of people who post here? As I type now... there are 2729 of us.

Vol fans have an inferiority complex. They accept and expect to lose. It's probably because most are poorly educated, come from socioeconomic hardship, and are damaged by religion. Whatever the case may be, Jones is our guy. Neyland will be rocking Saturday. Change is not coming.
Congratulations. In a sea of idiocy... you've managed to make a profoundly ignorant and bigoted statement that stands out like the sun.

"Damaged by religion"? By that of course you mean Christianity, right? That's just plain stupid. I know FAR more people "damaged" by the influences of secular and pop society than by religion.... even really bad religion. I have run across quite a few people whose minds were closed by their atheistic beliefs.

FTR, I am well educated. Successful in my career in a very competitive field. I do not struggle with socio-economic hardship. AND... I have found that my Christian faith has enhanced my life, career, education, AND understanding of the world around me.

If UT is 2-6 leaving UK... Jones will coach UT's first 4-8 team.

And at that point, he should be summarily fired and not allowed on the team bus for the ride back to Knoxville.

Alternatively, let him finish his 4-8 season. Then have a special December orange and white session, and after a moment of reverent silence put The General's statue at mid-field, and burn Neyland Stadium to the ground.

Everyone needs to realize if we go 2-5 then 3-9 is on the table. Vandy and UK have been getting better and will give us their best effort. If some of our players start to mentally check out this might be the worst record in the history of UT football

Having said all o I DONT like saying this, but if we lose to Georgia, we probably lose to Bama and Ky and Mo . Bama is almost a sure loss. That will make it 5-7 for the year whwn we were picked by the national media to have a chance to win the east. If 5-7 is where we end up- then give Jones 1 more year. But a 5-7 record will prove he is not the man to lead us out of this hell. It will be start over time again.

Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me

We figured she was rich, loaded to the hilt
And we figured she had class like the Vanderbilts
'Cause we had heard for years how she was so well reared
How was we to know they meant the way she was built

Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me

No way we lose to Candy or Kentucky. South Carolina & Missouri are the only question marks left, and even Jones can't screw the pooch that bad.

I thought 8-4.
9-3 possible and 7-5 unsuccessful but I wouldn't grab a pitchfork.
I thought we would beat UF or Arky one though. 5-5 on fourth downs is really making me miss Maggitt.

its unacceptable to lose to Kentucky or Vanderbilt. Butch has a black mark of one Vandy loss. Losing to either really ramps up the heat IMO. not saying either is terminal because I think he gets next year regardless of what transpires this year. But it makes next year very critical to show major improvements.

Agreed. Once upon a time, beating Kentucky & Candy was about as guaranteed as could be. Not so much these days.

It isn't about my feelings but I suspect you are correct. Jones' opportunity to earn a "C" on the season probably went out the window for good last week.

I am not disputing that 7-5 is a realistic possibility... only that it is a sub-par performance. It isn't "better" than last year.... and certainly not by a large enough margin.

There were actually MORE wins on the table for him than we thought. Many of us counted OU as a very likely loss and ended up being a game that should have been won.

If you want to "come to grips with reality"... then you need to think about how likely it is that Jones runs the table against the last 4 SEC opponents. He has a better roster. That's not in dispute... but talent wasn't the problem in the first 3 losses.

There's a real good chance that UK will be 5-2 or even 6-1 when UT travels to play them... at a likely 2-5. Frankly, UK is playing better and are coached better.

I don't think the question is whether Pinkel will outcoach Jones... just whether it will be enough to overcome a fairly significant talent gap. History says... yes he will.

The USCe game will have significance to Spurrier who has struggled with Jones.

Vandy is improving. They have little talent but even so are playing solid defense and finding a few things they can do on O.

The only almost certain win left on the schedule is UNT.

I agree that UT is likely 2-5 after Bama. I would love for it to be different but it isn't likely. I don't make many ironclad predictions but I'll make this one. If UT is 2-6 leaving UK... Jones will coach UT's first 4-8 team.

Thus finally sealing his own fate.

Georgia and Bama are losses. Lock.
Mizzou is probably a loss.

Kentucky is a toss up.
SC is horrible but motivated. Toss up

Vandy is bad on offense. Win.
North Texas is north Texas. Win.

2 guaranteed losses.
2 good chances at wins.
3 toss ups

Sc, Kentucky, Mizzou decide the season.

I see 6-6 tops. 5-7 possible.

This is one of the worst attempts at a troll job I've seen in a long time. You need as much practice as our four minute offense.

7-5 would be a disaster given the talent on this team. Sadly not a complete surprise given lack of coaching talent to match it.

We'll be no better than 6-6, probably 5-7 IMO. The next 2 games are gonna take a tremendous toll on the team that is already down IMO. Gonna be a tough pill to swallow.

Went in to the season saying that anything less than 8 regular season wins was a failure, given the talent on this roster and with what we had returning on both sides of the ball.

To get to 8 we have to win one of the next two and win out, and right now I don't think we accomplish either.

This team will be lucky to get to 6-6.

At this point 7-5 seems unlikely. 6-6 is where we will wind up. We are stuck with Butch, so he better rethink his staff. It sucks hard.

I thought that it was going to be 6 or 7 wins this year and the Vols still have a chance at getting 8 wins, they are playing a whole lot better ball,it is just a shame it hasn't became wins, just 11 points more or stop 11 points and the Vols would be undefeated this year

to me that is a hell of an improvement
