Just a heads up, Greg McElroy is taking a poll on his Siriusxm radio right now asking who the real UT is, Tennessee or Texas?

Currently Tennessee is in the lead. He is taking votes through twitter. Tweet your vote to him @GVMcElroy.

TENNESSEE is THE UT.

The actions of 1794-1796-1806-1840-1879 didst occur prior to the actions of 1827-1838-1845-1881.

Our teams name and our states nickname originated from the actions of Tennesseeans freeing your little state from el Mexico. You're welcome. We let you borrow Davy and thousands of other volunteers and got you a little thing called independence. Quit trying to take our colors and letters as well. Ungrateful jerks.

I don't care if we became a state in 2015, we are the only T that matters. Santa Ana can have this place back, just let me get north of the Red River first.

They were talking about how there would be no Texas if it weren't for Tennessee! McElroy was doing a great job with history lessons. He's not bad for a bammer....TX native

I don't mind Greg. I hated him while he was at Bama, but honestly out of all the media he is very positive on Tennessee a lot of the time. I'm guessing the inbred hicks didn't soak too much hate in him during his years down there. I always appreciate his commentary.

As far as the topic goes, I have always found this debate to be so pointless. Clearly if it wasn't for us Texas wouldn't be here, but I just hate this topic regardless.

We were a school before they were a state... our stadium is bigger, our orange is brighter, we had the most VOLUNTEERS at the Alamo (including Crockett), plus a Tennessean by the name of Sam Houston had a little something to do with turning Tejas into Texas. In short, We win.

Love your post, rtb. However, they are not trying to take our colors, my friend. Their "burnt orange" is nowhere near our beautiful "Tennessee Orange". Noone's is. I realize that there are no degrees of "uniqueness"; something is either unique or it's not. Our glorious University of Tennessee Orange is, truly, unique, Thank God....

Actually, Tennessee got its nickname because of the War of 1812. Governor Blount called for Tennesseans to volunteer for the military and support the country's war effort. The response was so great it easily eclipsed the number of volunteers other states were able to muster. Hence, folks started referring to Tennessee as the "Volunteer State".
The Texas/Mexico war did serve to further solidify and justify the nickname, though.

I believe that Tennessee is the only University in the country that has a color named after it.

Tennessee Orange is Tennessee Orange's real name.

Governor Blount requested 3000 Volunteers. To everyones (or no ones) surprise....30,000 Volunteers showed up for the great State of Tennessee. While most were actually sent home, the fact that 30,000 Volunteers showed up did not go unnoticed by Tennessee or the rest of the country. Volunteers quickly became synonymous with Tennessee after that.

So, we were in Austin, Texas a few weeks ago for a little vacation and my husband's sister got married and his niece graduated high school. My husband was wearing a bright orange shirt but it had no Tennessee logo or anything on it. We started talking to a gentleman and he said you must pull for the Vols because that is not Texas orange. Husband said "damn right". People notice our beautiful orange everywhere we go. Also, graduation took place at the basketball arena at the University of Texas and we saw no pictures of Rick Barnes anywhere.
