The Rap/Hip-Hop thread

What's your top 5?

I'm a sucker for Rhymesayers.

1. Eyedea
2. Aes Rock
3. Brother Ali
4. Vinnie Paz
5. Slug

I'll just do my 4 white rappers of all time, which knocks mac lethal down a spot really, but still.
For rappers its really subjective I think, Some people go by sales and recognition, some by awards, some by straight lyrics and some give special care to indie rappers. But I think it needs to be a combination of a little of everything, sales, wordplay, moneymaking, awards, all of it. I'm also a 90's child, so I'm a bit skewed to the guys who came out at that time, and I'm sure people will hate that my #1 is obvious, but I will/do defend them at least.

1. Eminem. Best in sales. lots of awards. Saved hip hop after pac and biggy martyred themselves pretty much. And he never shied away from who he was, a brutal, dark, storyteller that would always have one or two "catchy" songs to break bank on. And his early stuff? Infinite and the Marshal Mathers LP are still constantly in my headphones (plus, he wrote Stan. that's all I need to say on that).
2. The Beastie Boys. I don't think there's much I can say about them other than that they didn't help lay the ground work for white rappers, they helped lay the groundwork for all rappers in that time period.
3. Kidrock. People forget that this man was pretty much one of the founders of rock rap in the nineties and early 2000's (Limp Bizkit can burn in hell), and that Devil Without a Cause is one of the best selling albums of all time. If he had been able to pump out more albums like that and Early Morning Stoned Pimp instead of his country/pure rock phase, I think he'd be making a good argument for moving up.
4. Mac Lethal. I say him below the first three for one enormous reason. He doesn't make hits. He doesn't sell as well as the others while at the same time not be so much better of a lyricist that he should be ahead of them. His song's are killer, he tells great stories that genuinely feel important to him and to other people, and even though he's got enough money to do anything he wants (like obliterate Busta Rhymes and Wayne on their own songs from twitter votes), the awards and recognition still matter, otherwise most people would have twalib kwali/nas/common MUCH higher on their lists of all time greats.

I'm sure people will argue me greatly, especially if we just did our top 10 of all time on all levels no matter race (Mine includes andre 3000 and some people don't like that), but I'm always in the mood for a good debate haha

Name change completely unnecessary, but it doesn't change the fact he was one of the pioneers of gangster rap

He's doing straight up reggae. The cuts with Diplo/Major Lazer are pretty strong, at least the production is.

Not too bad.

I'm not sure if its been mentioned (and I'm not reading the whole thread to find out), but I was impressed by how good Drake's Take Care was compared to his first album. I always referred to him as "The worst rapper on his own song in Forever." and now I call him the man that did Marvin's Room. If he can improve as much as he did from album 2 to 3, as he did 1 to 2, he might actually end out being something more than the guy who got tons of people to jump on his song.

Take Care was 100x better than Thank Me Later, but I'm still not a Drake fan.

I like it, but I wouldn't call it straight up reggae. There's no rock steady bass or actual percussion, which all but makes reggae.

Again, I like it more than anything he's put out in a decade.

I wouldn't say I love Drake, but I now no longer view him in the same vein as I now view lil Wayne for example. And he has a song or two I can stand instead of think he was talentless completely.

Here's where I'm gonna really get made fun of. I think they need to go in and let Big Sean write three verses to that Justin Beiber song he's on. Speed beiber up more and give him the hook still, and let Sean make that song decent, because his verse on that is the only part to that record I can stand. Or just come full circle and bring in Will Smith's kid and Wayne and make it completely for the kids who think they listen to good hip hop

Normally I'd agree with you, but over the last few years, Major Lazer/Diplo has basically been redefining the genre. I've been huge on dancehall/reggae/ska since I was a kid, and damn near the entire genre has moved from the band to the ones and twos.

I think it's a new subgenre. There are still tons of bands making traditional reggae and ska. Hell, there are even some newer dub reggae groups, and until a couple of years ago, I thought that genre had completely died.

Lazer/Diplo is just missing some key elements. Even though I dig it, it would break my heart if that was what reggae became.

I just haven't seen much new with the genre in the last few years outside of djs. Yeah, there's an underground for absolutely everything but still.

That said, I think diplo is practically a genre unto himself.

but can you skank?

Punk ska was my jam in high school. Op Ivy 4 dayz

This is giving me the desire to start a reggae (and related genres) thread.

Dunno how big the rock steady crowd is in here.
