The QB situation (merged)

I don't think most fans realize just how HORRIBLE the offensive system that was here actually was. I think now having a more pro-style offense will help every player on offense.....the OL, RB, WR and especially the QB. I haven't given up on JG yet at all. He had that high ranking because he was/is very talented, I just think he was in a terrible system. I would not be surprised at all for him to take some huge steps forward in development this spring & summer. Butch's system was only descent the one year it was loaded with talent that is now on NFL rosters.

The biggest problem with the passing game under BJ was that he was WAY too conservative unless his back was to the wall. If you're only going to throw bubble screens and short hooks 90% of the time because you don't have the guts to put the ball in the middle of the field, then you're going to get crap. I don't know if the actual scheme sucked, or if he just left most of it in his pocket every game.

The UT passing game SUCKS. I do not believe JG can become an above average SEC quarterback. He simply does not have the necessary skills.

This, times 85, plus however many. I don't think we have so much as a baseline on any player that is or will be on the 2018 roster come opening day. We are literally starting from scratch, and while it stands to reason that some players will not reach the lofty heights we expect of them, I also think that you will see a whole new level of preparation, intensity, and results from Team 122. There are going to be some pleasant surprises on this team. Hopefully a bunch of them.

But it's the offseason, and hope springs eternal...or not...depending on whatever makes you feel best. I'm interested, and mildly excited, to see what CJP and staff can do with this team.

Go Vols.

I’m of the opinion we don’t fully realize how badly the players and Asst Coaches were affected by Butch. As the pressure on CBJ increased, he became increasingly paralyzed by fear refusing to let coaches coach and players play. He was too afraid of losing. The end result was 0-8 in SEC games.

Early indications make me think this staff has a different mindset, being the aggressor and creating fear in the opponents. I believe they are going to get these players believing they can beat anyone and then turn ‘em loose. I don’t care how bad they looked last year, let them adjust to a new staff that believes in them and see how they respond.

Either our coaches don't think our current QB's are a "right fit" or our coaches don't want to try to develop QB's.

The reason why I am concerned is because

A. Dormady decided to transfer, but he's more Pro Style.
B. JG is only a R-Sophomore.
C. Too many articles suggesting we are getting a Grad Transfer (1 year basically)
D. Only Jancek is the oldest now. We have a very young QB core to develop.

Thoughts?

The freshman PWO will be the guy.

JG will be the starter and will play much better under Helton imho.

The BIGGEST issue with JG was his blitz recognition. How many times did you see a blitz from his back side. He has to know that and slide the protection that way or get his back that way or if the blitzer is his man... Throw hot.
On a positive note his arm strength is great, footwork gets a little bit happy (probably from lack of blitz awareness), throws a very catchable ball needs to cool it on the "hotness of the throw", threw enough great balls to look forward to his talent level.

Also, the offensive line really had a tough time last year, so saying that it is hard to put all the problem on the quarterback. I still don't understand why he didn't switch protection calls the O-Line if that was such a problem. Just my thoughts.

Is it catchable or too hot? Is it a great ball or a boneheaded failure to read blitz that results in happy feet. Quite a few contradictions in the post.

No, not if you're paying attention. He throws a catchable ball (see a throw like the ones to Callaway vs LSU) and he needs to slow down on the short throws, he puts too much on it. I am honestly not sure how the other too correlate to each other.

I would add not only blitz recognition but pressure in general. He held onto the ball way too long too many times and didn’t seem to sense pressure. I agree with everything else and I think there’s very little to no doubt that he’ll be the guy coming out of spring and fall camp.

He displayed all that. At times he had too much velocity on short range/intermediate passes while predominantly displaying excellent touch and accuracy on the majority of his throws. His primary issue is his inability to sense/feel pressure and to get rid of the ball accordingly. Fortunately, he has the skills you can’t teach and I believe good QB coaching can get him straightened out on the ones you can. Jmo.

My thoughts. I think we won't hear about Keller Chryst till later in spring...he's graduation on May.

I don’t want to waste a blueshirt. I expect a much better class with a full year for our staff and I don’t want to have to sell some of them on a blueshirt. Peter burglarized by Paul equals Mary eventually.

Recipe for disaster. Whoever wins the job (Guarantano) will need as many 1st team reps as possible. He’s our best chance to win.

I've always refrained from saying anything negative about a player because from the outside looking in you simply can't see the whole story - porous line, BJ coaching, etc. However, for whatever reason - perhaps expectations - Guarantino has never impressed; in fact McBride seemed to give me more confidence. That's without any statistical backing or really remembering the opposition; McBride just seemed more natural and somehow less intimidated - like he wasn't really ready but had the qualities to get there and no mental stumbling blocks to stop development.

Two words...offensive line. 50% of the time it seemed like our QB is running for his life, knocked down, sacked, and the rest of the time his is hearing footsteps or trying to run/throw the ball out of bounds. Until you solve the line issues, we are wild cattin with whoever is in the QB position.
