Finally, a voice of reason.

Personally, I could not care less if Elmer Fudd lines up behind center, as long as he plays well. I think we have to throw out everything we think we know about the QB's, and just wait and see how things shake out in the spring, and fall.

One thing that I do think is that this staff will put the QB on the field that gives us the best chance to win. And I wouldn't be surprised if the ETSU and UTEP games were "auditions" for who leads us forward from there.

Or...we could just keep *****ing about last year.

I do not believe it is fair to judge him on this year. Our O line was straight garbage this year!!!! He had not time, no running game, no coaching, and no chance!!!!!!

I don't know about most of you, but I really do not feel that JG is going to be that great of a QB for us. He hasn't shown me one glimpse of GREATNESS. Sure, he has shown grit, toughness and that he can take a hard hit and get right back up and brush himself off, which I admire. But, the point here is that his arm strength is way overrated and that he isn't that accurate of a thrower. He is ok, but not GOOD. He doesn't show me flashes of a 5 star dual-threat QB at all. Look at the Tua Taglioulia Freshman from Alabama. Do you think JG could pull that kind of performance off in the clutch? lol Not even close. Im sorry, but I just don't see it. No way he should have been ranked #1 dual-threat QB coming out of HS. I mean the guy was named Mr. New Jersey! Personally, I think he sucks and is not the answer for our Vols.

His stats are actually much better than people realize. The reason people are so down on him is that we fared terribly in the red zone. Yet, that's not really a JG-issue. That's a lack of possession WRs and poor O-line protection issue. In the middle of the field, he looked pretty good towards the end of the season, but we could never score TDs.

I'm not saying he's a guaranteed success, but I do think he has a ton of potential and much of VN is assigning too blame to him based on things outside of his control. He can't control the lack of possession WRs. He can't control the lack of protection. He can't control a crappy offensive scheme. Hopefully, Tyson Helton figures out how to get much more out of him and the offensive players in general. And him and Coach Pruitt can bring in some more complementary players on offense.

There have been a ton of QBs that have struggled their first few years and then turned into studs late in their career. See Carson Palmer. Hoping with better coaching, JG has a similar transformation.

I totally agree. I also would like to have JG's detractors go back and do a film review of Josh Dobbs running for his life his freshman year. Not saying JG runs as well as Dobbs but am saying with both having poor OLs JG threw the ball better as a frosh.

I think putting JG on Alabama you’d see a totally different QB. With UT he had a line that couldn’t block and receivers who couldn’t get open along with coaches who couldn’t coach. He’ll be fine now.

McBride has to be the most overrated QB in UT history at this point. Every QB thread involves a dozen people talking about how he's the next big thing. I honestly don't know what crack you all are smoking.

He was 17 for 40 (43%) for 3.8 yards per attempt against 2 of the worst defenses we faced all last season. He threw 1 TD and 2 INTs. People bashed Nathan Peterman endlessly for putting up numbers like that. VN has to be the absolute worst judge of talent out there.

McBride will be lucky to ever see the field as a QB again.

No I watched the whole season. When the going got tough, he didn’t get going. He held onto the ball too long, did not know when to step up in the pocket, and did not know when to tuck it and run. I know there are a million excuses you can make for him, such as the o line, but he did not pass the eye test last year.

You must not have read the second part of my post where I said hopefully he would mature and grow under new management. My narrative is simply that. He has more time, but based on last year, no.

It would've helped to not get hit 20 times a game and constantly be on the run. Dobbs would've looked like a giraffe on ice a lot of times playing behind that line last year.

Dobbs played behind worse lines. He never had a guy like Trey Smith blocking for him. And the rest were guys he made look good the last 3 years with his legs.

Josh Dobbs made the same o-line look decent the past 2 years.

JG was a 20 year old redshirt freshmen last year.

Stop comparing him to a 18 year old true freshmen who showed up in the summer was supposed to redshirt. Its a preposterous comparison.

Unfair to compare anyone to Dobbs, Manning... they are generational type players and have the stats to back it up. We need a guy who can make good decisions and show flashes of greatness next year. We aren’t going to have a Josh Dobbs again cause he is a one of a kind great in Tennessee FB history.

When I look at last season, I considered it a waste of a year of eligibility for every player on the roster. There were time I almost felt like I knew what the Chicago White Sox fans felt like after the 1919 World Series. This team played so badly I thought they could have been more competitive had they been intentionally throwing the games or playing drunk.

So, to try to draw any conclusions when so much was falling apart around them seems unreliable. Especially with the QBs who I felt were fortunate to finish the season on their feet.

So I just want the teacher to erase the board, tell the students to forget everything they learned last season (which was not much more than how to hate the game), and start the class all over again. Treat it like a midterm dropping of the class, and retaking it next term with a professor who knows his ass from a hole in the ground.

Our current QB's are terrible. The biggest rebuild will be getting a competent QB who can function at the D1 level.

JG is not terrible. He was in a terrible system, just like all the other QB's that have transferred from UT under CBJ and went on to become stars.

Either our coaches don't think our current QB's are a "right fit" or our coaches don't want to try to develop QB's.

The reason why I am concerned is because

A. Dormady decided to transfer, but he's more Pro Style.
B. JG is only a R-Sophomore.
C. Too many articles suggesting we are getting a Grad Transfer (1 year basically)
D. Only Jancek is the oldest now. We have a very young QB core to develop.

The good thing about everything you said. Those are coachable issues. At least he didn't need throw a bunch of interceptions, miss receivers by 5 yards a ton. His highlight video on youtube from last year is pretty good. His deep ball is on point a lot. Threading the needle with receivers. He's about to have a good QB coach and a fairly decent QB Quality Control guy for the first time in his college career with 3 years of eligibility left.
