I was listening to a sports show this week and they were asking listeners if they thought we had a difference maker at QB on the team this year & if so what kind of effect he can have on the W-L record. My immediate thought was if Pruitt is who we hope he is then I don't think we need a difference maker at QB. This made me wonder about average vs above average coaches and the effect they can have on a team. Until last years debacle I believe that CBJ would be considered average to slightly below avg depending on your definition. For me average is a .500 record. So I went back over the last 5 years & ran the numbers counting only sec games. 40 SEC games should be 20-20 record. Factoring in playing AL every year & you could argue 15-25 may still be considered average to below average. CBJ was 14-26 in SEC play over that time.
I then looked at each SEC series over the last 5 years. If CBJ was for arguments sake average and CJP is above average how would that look for the final score of each series.
CBJs teams in SEC play over his 5 years averaged 25 pts per game & gave up 29.8 points per game. This past season scewed the numbers making the differential much higher. If CJP is the defensive coach we believe he is then if we can be just average on offense & maintain 25ppg but be 15% better on defense that would bring the defensive ppg to 25.3 vs the SEC.
By each series it would look like this. The last 5 years avg scores vs each opp. In ( ) would be the opponents avg if we improve 15% TY.
2013 to 2017
UT 22 ppg vs FL 24.6 ppg (20.9)
UT 27.8 ppg vs GA 33.8 ppg * (28.7)
UT 25 ppg vs SC 25 ppg (21.2)
UT 24.9 ppg vs MO 30.1ppg * (25.6)
UT 40.1 ppg vs UK 23.1ppg (19.6)
UT 29.8 ppg vs VDY 28.6 ppg (24.3)
UT 12 ppg vs AL 36.3 ppg (30.8)

OTH SEC west UT 18.9 ppg v 37.6ppg (32)
* last years blowout games severely scewed the averages vs GA & MO. In fact, before last year we were in the plus on total points scored against both teams but the blowouts to each put us on the negative side for the 5 year average.
Obviously none of this means anything but it does give me hope that if CJP is a better than average coach we may begin to get on the right side of the scores against FL GA KY MO VDY & SC on a regular basis.

In a competitive game QB play matters. We need a QB that will step up and make some plays. Sure with a game manager as QB we may manage 6 wins, but with a QB that can make a defense pay for selling out to stop the run or the pass, there are no limits to what the Vols can do this year.

So your saying that we might win 2 or 3 SEC games this year? With 3 cupcakes and WVU, are you saying our record should be in the 5-7 to possibly 7-5? That is what most people are predicting. Personally, I feel if CJP is the right guy to lead us to the promise land, he has to get us to a bowl game this year. I'm hoping CJP can lead us to 7 or 8 wins this year.

Im not predicting anything. I am just wondering out loud if CJP turns out to be a good coach, will that lead to better than expected results this year.

It all depends on what your expectations are. I think we should go ahead and expect him to get us to Atlanta playing for a playoff spot. As the season goes we can judge his effectiveness better. He needs to know we expect 2018 to be great. We all know he wants bigger players, but he needs to figure out how to win with what he’s got. We’ll see how things work out and go from there.

Or trick yourself into lowering the bar, expecting 3 or 4 wins. Pass on that garbage. Get real. There is enough highly rated players to expect greatness from the team if CJP is as good of HC as he has been a DC.

I won’t hold it against him if we get man handled due to having a small team. I will if we get out schemed.

Let’s not forget Pruitt has hauled in some talent to fill some big holes since he arrived and recruiting has been outstanding. If he gets me to a bowl game and we are not out schemed along the way I’ll be happy.
Do we have some good food layers, yes, but not enough to expect to win the east. Looking back at the Fulmer run we had great players 3 deep. That’s what it takes to win a championship.

I have surmised this before but I think that it does stand to reason that Tennessee is not truly under some football curse. We live in an age where having more experience on the team does not necessarily matter. If the right coach brings in the right system that fits a team they can do things that no one anticipated they could do before. Before last season did anybody think that Central Florida could go undefeated and win a New Year's six bowl beating Auburn? NO! We have the pieces and if CJP is a winner at head coach, then 7 and 5 or 8 and 4 is not unreasonable at all. We have a tough schedule, but that is just life at Tennessee.

Not to be rude but about 40 teams would have been undefeated in regular season with CFU schedule but your point is well taken.

I'm a Bama fan, but follow UT, and Auburn. I was at the game last year in Tuscaloosa. I thought that John Kelly, and RaShaan Gaulden played winning football...especially Gaulden. I would also include Guarantano on that list. I'm not sure Brady, or Montana would have fared any better against the push Bama's DL was getting most of the day. But hats off....Guarantano stood in that pocket, made his reads, and took it on the chin when necessary, to move his team.

When did that happen? Here are his stats. Tennessee has 108 total yards...EEC68C6E-9946-4370-B162-67DC3F1CF051.png

With no actual number to compare CBJ to CJP as HCs we’going to have to wait.

Stats don't tell the story. Your QB had no....zero...nada...chance in that game. Bama did a good job of blanketing the UT WRs, and the Bama DL was in Guarantano's face all day (we had a heck of a DC in those days). If I were a UT fan, I'd be less worried about a QB, and more worried about an effective offensive line. I also thought the Vol's defense showed up to play, t least for the first three quarters. Shoops was gambling on virtually every play, and Bama didn't have an answer. What killed the UT defense was two personal fouls...by the same guy. After that, the game started to get out of hand.

We have clearly better talent in 3 games and clearly worse in 3 games.
The other 6 should be within 10 - 14 points.

We simply don't yet know what "The Pruitt Effect" is.

It's going to be something. Every head coach has an effect. And we're all hoping it's gonna be something really good when it comes to Jeremy.

But we just can't yet know.

Wait, out.

Oh I agree completely. I was just thinking that if CBJ was below average & we used his numbers as a reference point then if CJP is hopefully above average that we could draw some hope as to the season. Its all BS but I thought a fun way to speculate. Based on the responses I would say I did a poor job of conveying that. Most seemed to miss my point

Nice post. I understand your logic. Gives some hope that maybe we are not so far away from winning.
