The Pride!

Gotta love it! I think it's just one of those things that makes college football unique and the Pride does it like no other.

Late in the summer, especially in the small towns close to High Schools you can hear the HS bands practicing and it always makes me smile because I know Fall and football season are close at hand.

:) No offense taken. But...

My son started 4 years of varsity soccer at his high school of 1400 students. He was also the fastest player on his team all four years. Athlete. Why do I brag and point this out?

He said gameday in the POTS was the single most physically grueling thing he's ever experienced in his life. Minimum 8 straight hours of standing, marching, and blowing your lungs out for the majority of it, while wearing a 20lb wool suit in ANY weather.

Band? Yes. Nerds? LOL.

POTS = Band Studs. Each and every one of them.

AV (Father)

While I agree that the Pride was physically grueling (I did two years, 2007-2008) I don't think it is as physically grueling as many sports. When I play basketball for a couple of hours I am more tired than I was after a day in the band. I think the more demanding aspect is the time aspect. We spent almost as much time practicing and traveling as the football team throughout the year. On top of that, dealing with the band haters is always annoying. There are always going to be the morons that diminish what you accomplish just because you are in band.

I never knew that it was possible to have an article of clothing that enhanced whatever the outside temperature was. If it was 90 outside, it felt like 112. If it was 25 (like at the 08 inauguration), it felt like 10.

At the 1970 SMU game in September on the old Tartan turf. I might as well have been in a jungle sweat box in the Viet Nam jungle.

The bands is one of the things that make up college FB. Can't wait to hear The Pride Of The Southland band crank Rocky Top! My ringtone on my phone is set to Rocky Top and I'm sure a lot of other Tennessee fans are to. I love when it starts ringing during the day because I work with a few bama and gaytard fans and it drives them crazy when it starts playing. They aggravate me about it all the time. I always tell them its a TENNESSEE thing and u wouldn't understand. Lol

I was at that 08 inauguration. I don't think I've ever been that cold in my entire life.

I see that and raise you Reagan's second inauguration

It was so cold that

(a) when we practiced in the Pentagon parking lot my trombone slide froze

(b) the parade was cancelled due to cold

They herded us into the Capital Center when Reagan came to talk to us. A tv station was interviewing various band people and all these hs band kids were crying because they raised all kinds of money and couldn't march in the parade. They came to us and we said "free party. whoo hoo".

Spoken like a true Tennessean.

I'm curious as I don't know much about the band unis. Why have they not updated the material from WOOL? Put Nike on this issue. You would think they would have summer and winter versions as there is a pretty dramatic swing from Sept to late Nov in Neyland.

I marched in the 2005 (Bush's 2nd Term) inaugural parade. I remember it was cold, but not unbearable. It snowed like 6" in DC the day before the parade, though.

Lots of girls flashing us from the dorms at GW, though. Definitely the highlight of the parade.
