Ok here it goes I'm thinking tonight was gonna be as Vanilla as it gets because of who we played and didn't want to show our hand to future opponents.. Right? Or Wrong? Think about it the bowl game last year the coaches implemented new things and open things up because we had nothing to lose or didn't have another opponent.. So was this the case tonight?

Maybe at first, but not rest of game. Travis Stevens said we ran 6 plays just different formation and that they knew the play. Also no reason not to throw ball down field more if for nothing else to make their Cbs and safety play honest.

We actually played under center for 1 play. I think we should've called more plays like that. I honestly think the coaches were gonna use this game as an "experiment" with their play calling. But then it backfired when we got behind, so they didn't want to try any "new plays". I don't think we expected to be in 3rd and long situations either.

What is the sound made when 5,787 VN football fans run smack dab into reality? A big loud thud? A sort of a squashy sound? I think I heard it tonight..

Were the coaches really afraid to show their hand to VT tonight? If so, then they have less faith in this team than the TV analysts that were lambasting us after the game.

Ranked 9th

SEC Network was set up on the sideline when they were warming up.

Nearly full stadium to watch them play on a Thursday night.

Cam and Jalen came back to do something.

Team still has a lot to learn. Tonight sucked.

I think it was boring and vanilla on purpose. Anyone that's watched Tennessee the past two years knows we are best when Dobbs runs the ball. Coaches called barely any designed qb runs or options to show as little as possible for next week.

Go back to last year and watch what we did well offensively. Opposing coaches know that.

I know but we can't blame it on youth.. Maybe a first to be ranked and in the spotlight I dunno

All well and good but hiding the playbook and nearly taking a loss is no bueno.

This was a formal and final confirmation that win lose or draw this team is only effective with Dobbs being utilized in the run game. It may be high risk low reward but we cannot go the Bama route and keep him immobile and still put up points.

I agree. I thought we would have seen it open up some in the 4th quarter. Qb draws. More runs with Kamara. Or Kamara/Hurd on the field at the same time.

We got lucky.

Well... if our goal was not to show how good we are, we certainly succeeded.

It was garbage. It's like Debord just planned we'd be up 35 in the second half and did almost NOTHING to adjust when we weren't. The one and only time we didn't run something boring and predictable we scored a 67 yard TD. I was more pissed off at Debord than anyone tonight, and there were quite a handful of people I was pissed off at.

I agree jus play our game..... if that was the coaches were doing to hold back I throw that plan out now.. If it is gonna be like this all season then we are in trouble..

We HOPE it was a vanilla book. But even if we agree to that thought:
Our O line was porous,
Tackling was poor,
Special teams were below expectations,
Our running QB was sacked twice,
Our defense had zero sacks and 1 turnover.

Those things aren't due to vanilla playbook.

I thought the same but it seemed the field was slick as ice at times -- I wonder how things would have been on a dry field

Yes HOPE is the word.. I hope this game was the dud game..

Horrible game plan and poor execution. I never liked the DeBord hire, we should have hired somebody else. His offense is too predictable and we have no passing game.
