When Jones punted with 3:00 minutes left to go. That call to punt was MASSSIVE looking at the grand scheme of things. If we didn't punt and did not get the 1st down by going for it on 4th down, UGA gets the ball at midfield. Instead we punt and pin them deep on the goal line. As we all know - we get a strip sack for a TD to take our first lead of the game. That TD on the strip sack ultimately got the 2 late dramatic TD going because Jones elected to punt and pin them deep. That play call to punt was the biggest decision in the game IMO.

What was most impressive is the fact that our long snapper made it down there to catch it over his shoulder. That was a great play all around.

+1. The same long snapper many complained about receiving a scholarship. 5 games into his career, he's earned it.

I listened to Doug Mathews "Big Orange Sunday". He commented on this.

Riley Lovingood should get a game ball. He was the longsnapper on that play. Not only did he get the snap off, but was able to hustle down and catch the ball before it hit the ground.

Mathews said that it's hard enough to catch a spiral pass running like that, but an end over end punt coming down, when you snapped the ball to begin with.

YES OP, this play could very well be what put us in a position to win.

I am no football strategist but it seems to me that Butch plays a game, in general, that heavily favors working the field position to his advantage over high risk plays. THe presumption being that if you can keep the field position advantage, eventually the breaks go your way.

Boy was I wrong. As bad as defense was hammered over the pass. They had several good stops when we needed it and O wasn't moving.

He does. Looking back at Saturday, while seeming conservative it reminded me a lot of the 2013 Carolina game where he played field position and we needed a big catch from North to put us in position to win the game. Butch plays field position football and IMO if your defense is playing good that's smart football. We done the same thing to Florida, especially in the 2nd half.

That's because most causal fan has NO IDEA the unique qualifications for a long snapper. From the exact physical size to the speed to turn into a gunner and get down field. Takes a very unique person to fit all the requirements needed. Another example of how 85% of posters here really don't understand whats going on....

Imagine the punter not placing the ball on the goal line and Lovingood not recovering it. Had the ball been on the 20 then UGA would run the ball and the clock and we not get the defensive t.d.

as it was happeneing, i don't recall being upset about the punt. 3 point game, have all your time outs....plenty of time if you get a stop. it was the right call, regardless.

next play....well, you know.

good call, even better execution, and a start player making a star play. that's what it's all about.

I didn't think it was that big of a decision really. The D had settled in pretty good. Pinning a FR QB deep seemed like the prudent play with that much time remaining.
