Perhaps I'm just reading too much into things, but it seems to me that UT will be switching to a 3-4 defense for this upcoming season. Looks like Dooley is trying to load up on DE/LB and LB/Safety hybrids. Also, who thinks we may be looking at a "running back by committee" approach? Does Oku maybe become the featured return man/third down back/in motion-slot receiver?

I heard he recruited Nash Nance as a qb/cornerback hybrid. Once the nation sees he can play both ways, the Heisman will be his.

there is no way to know what the defense will be until a DC comes in so speculating is pointless. Its like wondering what color to paint a babies room without knowing the gender.

but you can always paint it neutral colors!

Based on our current recruiting targets, who would you suggest to play NT if we moved to 3-4? I don't see us with any players who would really be able to successfully fill that role, and you gotta have that in the 3-4 otherwise things can fall apart really fast.

Can't run a 3-4 next year. You have to have a stud nose guard that can take up 2 blockers. We don't have that and I don't see anyone coming in that fits that bill.

UT doesn't even have OL's big enough to convert to a 3-4 nose guard. That switch is highly unlikely. UT also doesn't have guys who fit the 3-4 tackle model either.

All I know is the defense better be ready to play alot of snaps. We will not be able to block on offense and Palardy will be getting alot of reps.

Maybe and maybe not, it's way too early to see how our OL shapes up and what the QB situation will be.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but wouldn't lack of DT depth be more of a problem if you're playing them two at a time in a 4-3? Granted, Hughes is the only DT on the current roster that would be a good fit anchoring a 3-4, and he obviously can't take every snap, but why keep bringing in high school LBs and DBs when there is a decent number of each already on the team. Plus, adequate DTs are harder to find, so it makes more sense to play a 3-4, IMO.

Montori Hughes would probably be the starter. The kid isn't small, and is probably going to bet bigger. However we need others behind him for depth.

So what happens if we don't have the OL's to play a 4-3??

I like to speculate or I wouldn't look around here, but speculating on a change in defensive schemes with no dc. Don't see how you can do that intelligently. As far as who plays at rb, well we have one coming off major surgery and one coming in(maybe since nsd isn't even here yet) so I don't think you can tell anything until spring. Also we don't know what our line is like, it's so questionable, there may not be many carries to split up, because they can't block and we can't run....

3-4 nose tackle requires a different quality guy. You have to have someone who commands double teams. We don't have that. Montori has the potential to be good, but he's not shown he can be a consistent player, nor does he have the size to be that nose tackle(think mt. Cody). Either scheme can be good, but the most important part is having the players that fit the scheme. Our linebackers who are very fast and smaller behind three dlinemen are a recipe for records. Record yardage for the other te running.

I'm not saying that we can never run a 3 - 4...but I will mention two things here.

First - I agree with all who say that it is impossible to know until a DC.

Second - Regardless of who the DC is, it is very possible to make the prediction that given our current personnel (including our very solid recruiting class) if we switch to a
3 - 4 we will resemble shredded cheese a lot more than we will Big Orange.
