The Petitioners were right

I didn't sign the petition. I thought Cuonzo Martin was a solid, dependable guy and that we ought to let the season play out.

But, in hindsight, I have to admit, those of you who signed the petition were right.

You were right because Martin turned out to not be a solid guy. Turns out, he can't handle criticism.Turns out, he's the kind of guy who doesn't expect his job to be on the line when heading for his 3rd straight NIT at a major program. Turns out, he's the type of guy who will issue a statement saying he's staying at a school and praising their fans, and then do an about face two weeks later, while on a recruiting visit paid for by that school and their fans (taking said recruit with him to his new job). I had him all wrong.

You were right because, it turns out, we really couldn't wait for the season to play out. Before it did, Auburn swooped in and hired Bruce Pearl away. It was a move that was almost universally praised by the same media that seems intent to criticize UT fans for wanting the same thing for their program.

I just wanted to say that I was wrong. The petitioners were right. They didn't jump the gun. Had the rest of us listened to them, we would have a proven elite basketball coach right now, and we wouldn't have kept giving chances to an untrustworthy guy who can't handle criticism.

Silly but it proves why He left.

Not saying the new coach will be a failure. I am saying we have to give him time to make it his team and bring in his players. This is not an overnight process. Don't call for him to be fired if next year we don't go to the elite eight.

We will have to give him time CM left the cupboard bare.

I only have a couple of comments to add about Martin at this point:

1) I have read over and over that he is a "great guy". All I know of him is what I see on the court and the very few comments he makes to the media. So I am in no position to judge his character or personality. So, what is it that all the rest of you have access to that leads you to make the "great guy" conclusion?

2) As a fan I felt totally distanced from him from his first day on the job. Nothing he did or said over the three years resulted in me drawing closer to him as our coach. I got to the point where I felt his desire was to compartmentalize his basketball world into a protected bubble of just him and his players. I felt he didn't value the fans as an integral part of his job, and I felt this long before any petition might have made him and the players hunker down into a bunker.

I am grateful for the sweet 16 run. It was an unexpected adrenaline rush for a few weeks. But now, I am looking forward to the change. I am looking forward to a potential opportunity to be "spoken to" directly by the new coach as someone that he embraces as part of his job.

I didn't sign the petition because it was stupid and during the season, you don't do that to your team!

Yes, I thought CM was nothing more than a mediocre coach who hit his ceiling this year and would struggle to ever make the tourney again. I was hoping he got the Marquette job but they thought better. Now I'm just glad he's gone and we are off the buyout hook.

This^^ totally agree, the only bad thing about CCM leaving was the time. He did the most he was ever going to do here with the most talent he was ever going to have and we still barely snuck in the tournament. I don't get everyone defending him, if he was so good why is our roster just so packed full of talent he recruited for next year? Oh it isn't.

I also didnt sign the petition, and I dont think they where right. CCM couldnt stay in town, you say thick skin he needs to grow, but when you have KIDS that attend Knoxville schools they will make your skin thin. Whats happens the next time they lose a game they shouldnt have, his kids gets it at school even though they dont deserve it, but we teach our kids bad habits inside our homes that transfers into bulling at schools....The martins needed a new start...

How many season ticket holder u think actually sign the petition?

No, those who signed the petition weren't right. It was flat out disrespectful. While I believe Martin likely wasn't the answer long-term, he was not an abject failure. His record was within the ballpark of what was expected, and he did not commit violations that would have put the school on probation. Accordingly, he did not deserve to have his employment terminated through 2.5 seasons, as 30+ thousand people advocated. It would have been embarrassing for the UT administration to have fired him at that point. Now, the actions of those people will potentially have a negative impact on the school's ability to hire a new coach. Those people were not right.

The ones who were right were those who suggested that the fans and administration wait until the end of the season, assess the results of 2014 and the previous two years in totality, and make an educated evaluation of Martin's performance. The administration did that. If at that point, the school decided that Martin shouldn't be the coach in 2014-2015, I would not have been upset. Likewise, had Martin remained and had his salary adjusted to the top third of the league's coaches, I wouldn't have been upset either.

So if Cunzo came back next year what your prediction for the team's record?? Would we make the tourney??

This was his most talented team he has had. He barely made it into the NCAA tourney, through a play in game. If we had lost that game, I consider that missing the tourney. Play in games do not qualifiy. Isn't it his responsibility to recruit quality players?? Who would score points for us, Richardson then who?? How many of his Juco players panned out?? I can recall him signing about 4 players that never developed. That is a result of coaching or lack of..

Im glad he is gone. Lets hope Hart brings in a quality coach. Bring the checkbook. A winning Basketball team can make the university $$, due to our passionate fanbase attending games, concessions, & gear.

My .02

This is where you guys end up sounding delusional. If you told any fanbase at the start of the season, outside of maybe 1 or 2, that your best player would have the ball in his hands with a chance to send you to the Elite 8, they would take it, all day every day. They wouldn't care how they got there. Basketball is a tournament game. It is not football, where every game is do or die in the regular season. U.T. made the tournament and made a deep run in the tournament. Kentucky played like dog crap all season, but I'm fairly certain the majority of U.K. fans are thrilled with the season.

All of you nay sayers will regret this move for probably the next 3 seasons.

DUDE!!! WE DIDN'T MAKE A MOVE!!!!

HE DID!!!

All you starry eyed fawns sucking at his teet after he finally made a tourney and fumbling over yourselves trying to find out who made your Daddy with a wandering eye feel bad...unbelievable!...he didn't love you Junior...no matter how much you scream and pee your pants...change and we'll introduce you to a wonderful man who will. :cray:

I suppose the stealth needed to complete his deal with Cal kept Cuonzo from meeting with his TN squad face-to-face to deliver the bad news. They were his kids but they had to hear about it from a staff member. Ah well..

Maybe somewhere deep in his soul XCCM didn't want to face a group of young men who have a big mountain to climb as it is, having lost 85% of their scoring and rebounding. Would his players consider that he was maybe getting out while the getting was good?

I'm sure that he'll smooth it out with them eventually..individually, as time allows.

All of you nay sayers will regret this move for probably the next 3 seasons. We are not going to get an elite coach. The fan base has proven that they expect miracles and will call for your ouster if you don't bring them in your first season. Does not matter that the incoming coach will have his own system and will have to try and make it fit to the talent he has now. If you lose a game on a bad call at the end of the game it is the coach's fault, let's fire him. Have a player have a bad shooting night, fire the coach. Take your unranked team into a top ten teams house and play a close game you could have won but don't, fire the coach. After being criticized relentlessly for a year the coach thanks the fans who have stood by the team during the rough stretch, fire the coach for not thanking the #$$ wipes who complain all the time.

And you wonder why we are not going to get an elite type coach. BP was not an elite coach when he got here. He was an up and comer. He did some good stuff while he was here but he also got in trouble with the NCAA. We could not keep him. He will not be back as coach at Tennessee so please stop asking for something that will never happen. Please quit expecting the new coach to take us to the national championship in two or three years and expect him to win the SEC his first year. It is not going to happen. I predict that we get another mid major up and coming coach who will struggle with recruiting because he is trying to get kids to come to a school where the fans will rip them apart every time they have a bad game, make a mistake or don't live up to your expectations. The fans will be calling for him to be fired before the first season is over because we will probably only win 15 or 16 games next season and barely make the NIT. Now here comes the shocker, you can only blame yourself because you have given this school this reputation. You whiners, complainers, and non basketball playing experts have taken any chance for this program to improve and go to the next level. One bad call away from being in the elite eight for only the second time in school history and you complain.

Do me a favor this next year. Shut your trap. If you can't find something good to say just shut up. You are becoming a plague on this university. Enthusiasm for your school is expected but constant complaint and pointing fingers make you look like a Gator fan not a Vol fan. Have some respect and get you expectations for the next few years on a level that is obtainable not just a pipe dream. No one goes to the national championship in their first year. We have never played for a national championship in basketball so don't expect the next coach to do it in 2015. Please use some common sense.

"Whateves!!!" - The Legion of the Miserable

I've got a simple way to reunite all y'all...wait for it...The Petition is to Martin as Gruden was to Dooley. BOOM!!!! Now yall can hug it out in the Bball forum again. :hi:

i think his skin is pretty thick, he just chose not to have to deal with it.

y'all keep trashing the man and i haven't heard or see him say one negative thing about tennessee on his way out.

y'all wanted him out and he basically said "ok".

we'll see how it works out for both parties.

History holds that this will not work out very well for UT. Hope I'm wrong.

looks like a golden opportunity may be teed up for UT (Marshall).

but, recent history and the handwriting on the wall reinforces what is stated above -- UT is not going to dig deep and go toe to toe with the best a la KY in basketball or bama in football.

this hire has the potential to be a defining moment for the future of UT athletics.

Agree OP

I think this part is being missed by many:

Cuonzo just took a step down. Say what you want about our fans, the petition, whatever - Tennessee is a step above Cal.

If Cuonzo was as good of a coach as the media suggests, Cuonzo wouldn't be stepping downward, somebody would have come calling because it was clear to everyone in the nation where this was heading and has been for months.

It's threads like these that just go to show many VOL fans simply don't have a clue. The Bruce Pearl petition was a big mistake and the reflection of a fan base that is never content and simply clueless.

In fact, even after the incredible job Butch Jones is doing in bringing back the Volunteer football team, there are many fans who continuously come to this site to spout their ridiculous statements - such as predictions and expectations for 8 or more wins this season. What a joke you people are.

Much of it is a sign of immature, instant gratification fans who have no idea or simply want to ignore the fact that it will take several seasons to return Tennessee to a position where we can compete with top SEC teams on a regular basis.

I'm looking forward to that day as much as any VOL fan on the planet. In the meantime, let's all cheer on the VOL teams with passion and some sense of reality in mind.

Go VOLS!!!!!

I for one am definitely not clueless on any UT sport, but I am clueless as to why you think the CBP petition was a " big mistake ". And, for the record, most ppl on this site predict 6-7 wins this season. By no means, is the 8 win crowd a majority!

What is it with you guys?!? I haven't seen anyone say that we should be winning championships or the SEC & I'm on VN every day. The majority of the posts I have read were from ppl that were very happy that we made it to the sweet 16 but that CCM was still not the coach to get us to the top. You also said fans expect "miracles". If expecting to go to the tourney more than once every 3 years is a "miracle" then I guess you're right.

I agree with your post, but IMO we got lucky hiring CBJ & although he may not make as much $ as saban, I do believe that sometime in the next decade, we will start beating bama again with consistency.

IMO CCM wasn't the answer! He lucked up at the end of the year & won a few games. If he would have stayed, I think we were in trouble from here on out, until he was replaced. I want an amazing FOOTBALL team & a Bball team that has some fire & a coach that gets us to the tourney more than 1 outta 3 years. We dont have to win the SEC every year, but it would be nice to atleast make the tourney every year. Do you not think that we should atleast be one of the top 60 schools in Bball every year?

I for one signed the petition. I wanted Pearl then as I do now. My opinion on CCM has NEVER changed. Even now. Great guy. Family man. Good recruiter.. but for some reason the production just not there.

My response to hearing the Kiffin news : Through my phone at the couch, through the McDonalds food I was eating at my friend, and cursed out my best friend when he laughed.

My response to CCM : Kind of laughed.. didnt really care.. moved on with my day.

My point is most of the fanbase didnt want him here anyway.. and most important NEITHER DID THE ADMINISTRATION. Hopefully we get a great coach to come in.. but stop saying CCM isnt a great guy or he betrayed us. I would have done the EXACT same thing (Just not to Cal). He's a Stokes guy.. Stokes left.. CCM realized a tourny miss which would mean him getting fired would be a real possibility next year so he took the safer option for his family..

just my 2 cents

This... When I heard my exact thoughts were "Okay... Whatever."I also think its telling that it was around 6 pm when I found out. When Kiffin bailed I had about a dozen texts within minutes. Lets you know how relevant Martin was to this fanbase.
