The perception of our fans.

So everyone who's complaining about how the media is wrong, our perception of CCM, and how Dave Hart needs to be shown the door are failing to see the reality. The perception of CCM is that he is developing into a good coach that people want. That's why both Marquette and Cal came knocking.

Now the perception our fan base is that we are irrational, impatient, and unappreciative which is a reality. The way the Dooley saga and most recently the Martin situation played out has given our program a bad wrap. If we as a fan base don't grow and learn from this we will be come irrelevant in every sport. I know it's not all of the fans but the acts of the few are the voice of many in this case. Don't think for a sec that other coaches aren't taking note. You can say money talks and all that B.S. if you want but most of these coaches will live a well above average lifestyle if they never come to UT.

No player, coach, fan, or AD would have kept Dooley. That was the ONLY option with him. What made us look bad, however, was firing Fulmer and hiring Kiffin. You're supposed to upgrade your life, and that move in no way was an upgrade. We should have let Fulmer sit on the throne for a few more years, and then went straight to Butch Jones.

Now, as far as Martin goes, he underperformed for 2.75 years out of 3. As fans we were spoiled by the winning ways and theatrics of Bruce Pearl, and Zo was always just a fill in. Let's hope Dave Hart doesn't cock this up.

Are posters getting Alabama and Tennessee confused? Who poisoned trees? Crosses burned...did that happen? If so I would have thought that would have been NATIONAL news. Can't imagine ESPN missing that opportunity. And why so hung up on hillbillies, red necks, etc.? Ever read where the terms originated? And worrying about inbreeding...go read the laws of other states and other countries. Don't see Tennessee particularly stands out as distinct. Get some pride people. If you slam your state and university, you can't expect respect. I'm proud to be a UT grad, Tennesseean, and Southern. And I go mind saying so. Go Vols!

The fan base can demand a winner in a civil, respectful way. Im an alumni of UT and Im pissed at how our reputation has been tarnished by so many childish people who use the phrase "passionate fan" to justify stupid behavior.

THIS!!!!

This should be a sticky! So very well said in the simplest of terms. I especially liked one phrase so I'm gonna put it in all caps an yell it out ...

"TARNISHED BY SO MANY CHILDISH PEOPLE WHO USE THE PHRASE "PASSIONATE FAN" TO JUSTIFY STUPID BEHAVIOR"

Love it .. so true.

I agree with this; however, one of the downfalls of a "passionate fan base" is that there will always be a vocal minority that does some careless, dumb things to damage the school's reputation during tough times.

IMO this was a perfect storm with the Pearl situation.

If you picked any other school with a similarly "rabid" fan base and put them in the same scenario we've had over the past 5 years, I guarantee you that it would've played out the same (or at least similar) way.

For instance, let's say Billy D @ FLA was canned after NCAA violations, but continued to live in Gainesville and talk about how much he loves the city, the fans, etc.

Then XYZ coach comes in and puts a consistently mediocre product on the court for 2.75 years, in spite of having legit talent.

I guarantee you there would be a mid-season "Bring Billy D Back" petition going thru Gatorland, a la fireronzook.com.

But here's the problem with your Billy D analogy. That man has won two national titles and has more SEC titles than I can count on both hands. He had UF playing for a national title in his fourth or fifth year. I get that some of y'all like Bruce but where the hell are his titles? Sure, he had a nice little head-to-head advantage in games against Donovan, but Donovan is a legend, Bruce Pearl aint Billy Donovan, SO STOP TREATING HIM LIKE HE IS! That's why the national perception is that our fans are a joke, for exactly this kind of reason. "36,000 people want Bruce Pearl back? Who do those people think he is, Billy Donovan, Coach K, Jim Calhoun?"

I had mixed emotions when Fulmer was fired, but just because you made a bad hire doesn't mean Fulmer should have stayed. When a marriage is failing, then it is time to move on regardless. It is kind of like saying that a man should have stayed with his first ex-wife because his second marriage didn't work either. That isn't logical. Hiring Kiffin was the problem, firing Fulmer was not.

You should always have your next wife lined up 😎 Kiffin shouldn't have had a chance.
