The Oregon Game

Your confidence in this game combined with my insecurity about this game should make this an interesting matchup! Of course, starting a new quarterback (1 game against UNM doesn't really count) will definitely create a disadvantage in a hostile crowd; however, I believe an SEC defense will proove to be a much tougher obstacle. Look at the output against tOSU in the Rose Bowl and you can see what happens when Oregon goes up against hard hitting defenses.

Hopefully it'll be an overall fun experience --- and worse case scenario, we'll be singing Rocky Top on the way out of the stadium!

I'll be the one in green!

GO DUCKS!

I think we have a great shot at winning. There stud QB is gone, their star RB is suspended for their 1st game so he won't have any kinda momentum coming into our game and they are travling all the way across country to play in heat and humidity that they don't see in Oregon! Call me crazy but I am not impressed with Oregon the way most people are.

I'm not the most confident, but Tennessee won't be steamrolled as many believe. And I hope you're the only "one" in green!

Tennessee's defense is understated and being an early season game depth wont be a problem and we should shut them down somewhat...If Tennessee can score 20..they win, no question..

Both teams have wildcard factors.

Oregon is starting with a new QB situation. Kelly has an A+ average winning big games with new, very different athletes in Dixon, Roper and Masoli. But, you never know. We've all seen QB problems tank a team.

Tennessee does have Wilcox. But, his system will be new to the players. We'll see how much he'll be able to replicate the BSU performance in a much shorter time.

I put it at 50/50 anyones game. Looking forward to it. Wish I could make it in person.

We have another plus for this game. Peter Sirmon is a new grad assistant on our staff coaching safeties. He is a former Oregon player (was Wilcox's roommate/teammate). I believe he was a grad asst with Oregon last year, so he will know the personnel for the Ducks.

jesus i can't wait. Only 37 more days til football time. Although the Wilcox factor does give me confidence, our own inability to move the ball on offense worries me. That Boise State QB is one of the top QBs in the nation. Hopefully Neyland will be rocking. I know I'll be doing my part. :beerf:

The Oregon game takes me back to the 2006 Cal game when nobody gave us a chance and we shocked the world,I recall one of the Cal players calling Neyland one of the most intimidating thing he has ever seen.

I was at that game-and we sit right in front of the away fans. Shell-shocked does not even begin to describe how their fans and the team were after the 1st quarter. Oregon is a much tougher team in general, but Cal players did admit that Neyland was the most intimidating environment they had ever been in.

If we can get it as loud at the start of this game as it was for much of the 4th quarter last year against UCLA we might get off to a fast start. And 6-8 hours or tailgating doesn't hurt either. SEC games are one thing for an out of conference opponent-SEC night games are another.

Coming down from Louisville with my wife. We went to the UT/Ohio U game last year and I'm hoping this to be a good bit more exciting! I plan on being hoarse and having ringing ears for a solid week afterwards!

Oh it will be.. trust me, that Ohio game was the most lifeless I have seen Neyland in a LONG time.. The most noise that game was when the streakers ran across the field.. lol

I'll be heading to this game....rolling down to Knoxville from Indianapolis. Bringing several guys that have never seen Neyland...several that have...and my girlfriend of just under a year will be seeing Neyland and SEC football for the first time!! We'll be heading down early on Friday ready to get rowdy.

For the record, although my girlfriend has never been to a game yet, she knows what tennessee football is all about. She emailed me a month ago from work saying there was something she wanted to do on Saturday, Sept 18th.....but that she knew there might be a football game that day and didnt want to make any plans. So I thanked her for checking with me first and informed her that the vols will be kicking some gator ass that day and she immediately declined on the other plans.

Can't wait until it's "Football time....in Tennessee" and looking forward to the trip on Sept 11th.

Go Vols!!

I'm not real confident we can win a lot of games against superior opponents next year but this is one of the few I think we can pull an upset.

Let's just make sure our drunk buddies make it to their seats. Can't raise cane if you ain't standing in it first. I do think we can rattle their cages. That Outzen, Aiughtzen, whatever water dog bowl they play in is tiny! Neyland towers over you. Sound rains on opponents when that place is on fire!

It's certainly possible for you to win. You've got a defense with great athletes and a great coach telling them what to do. Oregon will be fielding an inexperienced QB, and will likely be coming in as the favorites having to deal with the hype. And certainly there is no place like Neyland in the Pac besides our humble abode.

I caution you against believing that Oregon will struggle with the heat and humidity. The fact that the game is at night will make that less of a factor, as previously stated here, but beyond that Oregon is a team that takes a great deal of pride in being one of the best conditioned teams in all of CFB. This is a critical point of focus for a program that has firmly established its identity has high-flying and breakneck in terms of tempo. In point of fact I would say that upwards of 80% of our opponents end up gassed midway through the third quarter because of the ridiculous pace the offense operates at. (And I would say last year we were actually a little slower than we had been in Bellotti's last year as HC.) Also one of the features of the indoor facility is fancy climate control, so the players will at least have a week to acclimate to what they might face.

The key here is that the QB will have to execute for any of this to matter. Masoli had a terrible time throwing in the Rose Bowl - and not only when he was under intense pressure from that impressive Buckeye pass-rush. Similarly in the Boise game he never got going. But if Costa or Thomas manages to come out and fight through your crowd, Oregon has the pieces to dominate the game.

It will be a really tough way to have a new (and while Costa is a 5th year who knows the offense like the back of his hand, I would still call him new) QB try to find his legs, that's for sure.

Lastly, by my count only 5 times over the past 3 seasons since Chip Kelly arrived have the Ducks failed to score more than 20 points. I would estimate that it will take at least that to win.

This is the season-defining game of the year. Win this, 7-8 wins is likely. Lose this, it could get ugly.
