I would have been ok with Marshall in 01 and 05 and would this year too. I would hope UT is really shooting higher first. Marshall will get a big job this year, IMO. My one question, and maybe someone more connected than myself can help with it, is why he hasn't been up for more major jobs. He had the CofC job and changed mind, and I believe he has been finalist for many jobs such as UT, S Car, UGA. My info may very well be off. Is there a reason he has toiled at Winthrop and Wichita for so long? Just curious.

Id be ok with Marshall. Definitely not a giant splash but a solid coach in my opinion.

Marshall interviewed with UT and I believe South Florida. (I don't think he ever interviewed with Georgia or South Carolina, at least not to my knowledge. Though I know for a fact Marshall and USC regret missing each other by a year once Odom retired).

The problem Marshall had is that the Big South has historically been one of the bottom conferences in the RPI ratings and I think he eventually realized he would have to take an legitimate "mid-major" job before stepping into a BCS league job. One can't really imagine how awful the Winthrop job was before he got there, not to mention the league as a whole.

Gregg is a terrific coach and I would like that hire. He is also a bit of a character himself, which would make for some entertainment.

Thanks for the info. I seem to think that it was Buzz or Marshall in 01 and both wanted job bad. A lot of fans are talking about Pearl wanted to be at UT, and it was a dream job for him. Marshall is another of very few coaches that would come to UT and be at their destination job. He wants the job and has for some time, at least as I have heard. I think he may be up for Mizzou job as well. Marshal imo is less risky than a Smart or Mooney, or even Grant. He has solid resume and seems like great fit. Not household name but a name that those who follow college bball (and past UT searches) should know.

recruiting?

Stole the 4A South Carolina player of the year two years in a row from Clemson and USC. One of them was a flop, but the other, Torrell Martin, went down as probably the greatest player in Winthrop history. (Craig Bradshaw also on that list)

Also got a handful of guys who had D-1 offers, like Pierre Wooten and Greg Lewis, to come to Rock Hill. He'll get it done recruiting-wise I think.

I'll take Marshall over Smart, Grant, and a majority of the names mentioned that weren't ridiculous.

I'm glad somebody finally made this thread, seeing as it seems he is the favorite.

Has that been reported? Just curious if you heard that, I haven't heard much on confirmed candidates. Hope it's true

I have only heard it a bunch on here, and just reading between the lines.
