The One 100% Guaranteed Thing About the New HC

I agree to a certain extent. I believe the guy we hire to be HC will not be expected to be a UT guy nor will he be the long term solution. I think Phil is going to instill his playbook on this one:

1. Get a seasoned vet who has had previous sustained success. Guys in this list would be in the mold of a Miles, Cut, or Gruden. Yes I included two guys with UT ties in there but just as examples of guys who fit the mold. The seasoned vet would lay the ground work for the expectations, the culture, and for an HC in waiting who would ultimately take over the program after 4+ years when the seasoned vet rides off in the sunset to the retirement home.

2. Get up and coming UT guys as the seasoned vet's main understudys (coordinators). Guys in this group would include the Martins, JBCs and Steeles. These guys would be brought in as the long term future plan guys for the program. The goal of these guys would be to be like a sponge soaking up everything they can from the seasoned vet HC. These guys instill the UT blood inside the program on the micro level with the players along with learning what it takes to build and sustain a championship level team.

3. In 4+ years the program's foundation is laid from the seasoned vet and one of the understudys takes over the program. At this point the understudy does not need HC experience as he will have soaked up all from the seasoned vet and has the successful foundation laid inside the program where all he has to do is step in and lead the culture.

At this point you now have a championship caliber team that is led with Big Orange men. If you look at it this plan is a blueprint for success in several highly successful programs. It's the path Lincoln Riley, Clay Helton, Dabo Swinney, Mike Gundy, Chris Petersen, Jimbo Fisher, Bobby Bowden (yes one from the past) and Phil Fulmer took.

This is how you build a Tennessee that is successful with Tennessee men, I believe Fulmer sees this and will go down this path.

I’m not trying to be argumentive or disrespectful by any means, but when was the last time a HC in waiting actually worked?

He also made the point he wasn’t against hiring a coordinator, and made the point that’s how he came up.

There are such things as coordinators with experience.

You guys are just reaching for anything to jump on the Martin train because he won a title here and is the latest hot name.

I'm not opposed to Martin being hired, I just don't think Fulmer has the balls to take the chance on him.

Everyone thinks the man rode in here on his white horse to save the coaching search yesterday. What Fulmer actually did though was get back at the guys that didn't go to bat for him when he was fired( Haslams) and the guy that pulled the trigger (Currie). And he cost us a shot at one of the best offensive minds in the game to do it (Leach).

I personally think there is no way he sticks his neck out for someone like Martin or someone who might overshadow him now that he is in the big chair.

So you’re saying Phil is going to hire a guy and dictate who the assistants will be?

Better get ready for another POS coach.

Sorry man but I completely disagree. Fulmer becomes an even bigger legend around here if he makes the hire to turn this mess around. It’s crazy to suggest that’s not what he wants.

Chris Petersen (Boise State), Clay Helton (USC), Dabo Swinney (Clemson), Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma), Mike Gundy (Ok St.). In there you have the current PAC-12 championship coach, two coaches who are slated to go to the CFP, one that about broke the BCS years ago and one who has been a mainstay at their program.

I'm not saying that it works every time because there have been several cases that haven't worked out but the ones that have have been very solid and like I said it follows the same path as Phil.

What is the connection between Fulmer and Doeren? I don't get it...

Do not want someone with a mediocre record in ACC. That ain't gonna cut it.

Meanwhile, Tee Martin just won yet another championship last night. He's a winner. Some guys are some guys aren't. Tee PAC 12 champ!

Did not realize "T" was the head coach at USC. Usually a victory is accredited to a head coach, to one of his asst. Or at best the whole staff and players. Not an asst.

It will have to be the right fit for the program. I'm not saying that Phil will dictate who the assistants need to be but I would say that he will make it clear in the interviewing process that he will want them to bring in some TN blood with the assistants.

Would you want to hire a guy who was not willing to bring in any TN guys on his staff? In our last two debacles of hires we saw only one TN guy in Jay Graham. Do you want guys who don't understand UT trying to lead our young men at UT? It doesn't have to be all UT guys but you have to have some with that passion and influence.

Fact is this is all about Recruiting the Top Talent in the country and Tee is a super star at recruiting.

I am not talking about a top 14 class, there is a huge difference in a Top 1 or2 class in terms of talent. No offense but our talent has been average at best for many years, and our coaching has been sub par for just as long.

These kids LOVE Tee Martin and he can get them to come to Tennessee vs Alabama and Georgia, and he is a great play caller, he knows the game and how to move the ball.

Most HC records are based on what they inherited when they got there. If the team was in the dumpster like we are, the coach is going to have so losses early on, so don't buy into "what his record" crap. Some poor coaches that took over some decent teams will look impressive the first few years and then fall apart down the road.

Give Tee a chance, he will get it done!

Bad move by Fulmer if true. His job is to hire the best coach available not only someone with Tennessee ties.

Imo, the best coach available would be Les Miles for our present situation. Les could have 8 more years available as he appears to be in excellent health. I think the better hire for long term would be Tee Martin because of his age, but we would have to have patience with him. Tee's HC says he is ready for a HC position, he said he doesn't want to lose him but he knows he will not be here long. Tee would step in immediately and be a top level recruiter. So imo I would take Tee and be patient with him as he would probably make mistakes, but on the other hand Miles is not a very good game day coach anyway, just a good recruiter and developer of talent in every area except qb.
But I would be happy with either of them.

Not suggesting that's not what he wants.

Suggesting he doesn't actually know how to do it and is still too arrogant to admit it.

Last time he did things his way he was fired here.

And no one has thought enough of him outside TN to give him a shot at a head coaching job, an assistant AD job, or anything else related to actually running a college program.

Les - HC
Tee - OC/HCIW

Les is 64 in about 5 years Les retires at 69 and Tee steps right into the HC spot. This right here is ideal for long term success.

That's what I am gearing up for.

All these coaches are arrogant to an extent and no one worth a damn is going to want Fulmer trying to run their team from behind a desk.

I just hope he doesn't somehow con Cutcliffe into coming back and saving his skin again like he did in 2006. I really like Cut and think he is in a good spot for where he is at in his career.

A lot more confident that Fulmer will hire a coach we can accept more than Currie. I hope he has the coach in place by at least this Friday. To bad Mays because of our inept season and terrible coaching search. Looks like he is down to three and not Tennessee. Hopefully we can get Taylor back.

Kiffin has Tennessee ties. So he should've made your list naturally. He was once our coach....

Think Fulmer ruled him out when he said something about someone who understands and respects Tennessee traditons and would represent UT with character or something like that. Sounded like a direct message to Kiffin at the time. Too bad he burned so many bridges. Think he would be fun.

Thing is...if the seasoned vet has great success, the assistants will have other schools after them. Most will go rather than wait to move up from OL Coach to OC if the OC becomes the HC.
