I don't know if this helps at all, but two things that work for me when I can't sleep:

(1) Close my eyes, and no matter what, keep them closed. No staring at the ceiling. No looking around. No checking the clock. Nothing. Keep 'em closed.
(2) Give myself 20 minutes (check the clock), and if after 20 minutes I'm still awake, I have to get up and do something unpleasant like clean the kitchen or bathroom or sort and fold laundry or whatever. I have found that this works remarkably well in getting myself to sleep. --cleaning the litter box is the ultimate self-threat. Those with kittehs will understand.

Note: I'm up at this hour because I have too many thoughts racing around my brain, and sometimes that just happens. I haven't slept more than 4-5 hours in a stretch for the last week and a half, and boy, is it telling on me.
