The Official Tennessee vs. Purdue Music City Bowl Game Thread, 3:00 PM ET, ESPN

Had the ball on their side of the field with 30 seconds, 2nd and 4, and throw 2 terrible passes that looked like wasted plays. Get 10 yards and kick the fg in regulation.

The last drive of the game lost this one. We just needed to get into FG range at minimum. We threw deep twice and scampered to get a 1st down on a short 4th and 2…why we did that is beyond me and to put the game into the hands of a kicker that hasn’t kicked a good FG further than 48 this year is just not good play-calling.

Then the horrible play calling in OT…my word…I really do think Heupel and his guys are good coaches but what in the world was that? This game was, I hope, the last of that and it gets addressed and cleaned up. The amount of penetration given by the o-line was pathetic as well. I could say a lot about every position, but truthfully, the whole team played pretty bad.

The good thing is, I haven’t felt this bad about a loss since Pitt, maybe Ole Miss, which has been a little while. Maybe we were robbed tonight, but we should have never been in OT with them. Our defense didn’t show up and out offensive play calling was very questionable in so many situations.
I hope this lights a fire under their hindends, but I’m not sure that kids playing these days care that much.

Yes, should have never been in this position. We left what, 2-3, 3-4 TDs on the field?

Yes it is.
From the NCAA rulebook 2021.

SECTION 3. Blocking, Use of Hands or Arms
Who May Block
ARTICLE 1. Players of either team may block opponents, provided it is not
pass interference, interference with the opportunity to catch a kick or a personal
foul (Exception: Rules 6-1-12 and 6-5-4).
Interfering for or Helping the Ball Carrier or Passer
ARTICLE 2. a. The ball carrier or passer may use their hand or arm to ward off
or push opponents.
b. The ball carrier shall not grasp a teammate; and no other teammate shall
grasp, pull, or lift the ball carrier to assist in forward progress. (A.R. 9-3-2-I)
c. Teammates of the ball carrier or passer may interfere with opponents by
blocking but shall not use interlocked interference by grasping or encircling
one another in any manner while contacting an opponent.

Article 2b seems to say no.

Why do these stupid ******** screw jobs only ever happen to us? New ways to lose a ****ing game every year. The refs will issue a statement Monday saying they made the wrong call and then go on about their day with nothing changing. Sick of it.

Music City Bowl needs VOLS…we ARE their full house…next time tell them where they can put the invite…where the sun does not shine!!

People will second guess Josh Heupel until doomsday…HOWEVER there is no dispute about the horrendous call denying the overtime touchdown‼️‼️

Really everything from the field conditions up were bad tonight. Oline was swiss cheese, Hooker ran too much ang got himself too banged up to make decent throws. Tackling was abysmal. Burrell. The entire secondary. Heupel didn't adjust his play calling when it stopped working. ACC refs.

To beat it all Purdue is a mediocre at best team.

Doesn’t make it the right call. It was a TD.

To be fair, though, I didn’t say it was how a game should ideally be called outside of the rule book or that it was always the right call. It was more an unfortunate scenario/situation.

If a side ref signals it dead, though, by rule it’s dead.

In an odd way, it’s sort of like a Cleveland Browns-Jacksonville Jaguars equivalent. Like if the replay booth calls in a replay, but the ball’s snapped before the referee runs onto the field, it still ends up getting treated as the replay booth challenging and stopping the play by letter of the rule.

It’s unfortunate, and I agree that it sucks, but it’s what happened per the rules.
