The Official Tennessee vs. Murray State Game Thread, 9:00 PM ET, SEC Network

Murray State was picked by Lunardi and Palm to make NCAA Tournament as a #15 seed. Very good shooting team, well coached but not real deep , they just ran out of gas last night.

Yes. How many SEC teams will we play that we will beat into submission, where they "ran out of gas"? None.

This team has potential. This win is inconsequential. SEC play is coming and we, at this point in time, we are not prepared for it.

Not sure I would attribute it to “running out of gas”...they played 8 guys double digits and we played 7 guys double digits. Also, from the opening of the 2nd half we were the better team and outplaying they, it’s not as if we just only killed them the final 6-7 minutes to win, we destroyed them the whole 2nd half.

# 10 getting in to foul trouble showed their bench had some flaws yes they played 8 guys double but that does not mean their deep. Their conditioning may be off this early a lot of teams that don't do their due diligence over the summer are not good at the end, their playing shape has to come by natural assimilation. Can take some till January to get in to game playing shape.

I find it hard to believe that Div. 1 college players need until January to get in basketball shape. Maybe the occasional big-boned/chunky kid, with mad natural skills talent or somebody coming back from injury. Other than that, u better be in shape or your told to transfer or even some form of a "git" shirt happens, like "git" off this team

If as a program they didn’t do their “due diligence” on knowing they needed to be in the best shape they could be in then they may wanna re-evaluate what they’re doing as a program.

But again, it’s not as if this was a nail biter deep into the 2nd half and then they just fell off...from the opening of the 2nd half it was pretty clear Tennessee was the better team and likely to come back and win.

Murray State is better than some of the bottom teams in the league

Unfortunately...... I have to see this team 2/3 times a year. They are always extremely athletic and always have a great coach. Beating them is never easy, no matter you are. I hate Mu**ay, but respect the crap out of their program.

At the end of the year, this will be considered a quality win for Tennessee.

If the less talented Murray team is considered anything more than a practice game, we have a whole lot of growing up to do. Point in fact. Against Murray, we had no answer to the lack of ability to include JJJ in any really meaningful way.

Bottom line: Where we are young, we perform like a young team. Better things to come, talent is there, lotsa "rough" players. Physical maturity is a pressing issue in the years to come with this group.
Do you consider the Evansville game a practice game for Kentucky? They are not nearly as well regarded as Murray State. I wonder if the voters will count that game for Kentucky when the rankings come out on Monday? I'm not jumping for joy because we beat Murray State but they are a solid team capable of beating several SEC teams right now. We saw some good things in the second half and I hope it continues and the freshman get better. Gov Vols.

Could care less about them. I want our baby giraffes to grow up fast!
You must be either new to college basketball, or just dumb. Maybe both? No team is ready for conference play 2 games in. Especially one that just lost 4 starters. Now if we would have played the way that we did the first half the entire game then there would be some I could see being concerned. I honestly don't see how one could complain about that game? Our team played soft defense in the first half, settled for 3's, and Murray State was hot from 3. Coach Barnes made adjustments, shortened the rotation, and the defense locked in on defense, and completely man handled them in the 2nd half? What more could you have wanted?

You're right. You are a cretin!

Michigan state's baby giraffes lost to a team that lost to Evansville at home. What's your point? The majority of teams aren't near to what they will be in March.

Agree

State played “over their heads in the first half.”
They shot the ball much better than their “norm” (especially from 3 at almost 55%); that was not going to continue.

They were also out rebounding Tennessee just over 2 to 1 (some via “their part” some via a lack of hustle from Tennessee).

Tennessee came out in the second, played more aggressively, with much more hustle. They took care of the ball better and continued to be efficient on O..........and with improved rebounding they had more chances, while limiting States chances.

I really feel the second half rebounding is what changed the game (and better D).

Also Pons’s scoring in the first half meant a lot more than some might think. He helped to keep the game close, which allowed Tennessee to do what they did........who knows what “would” have happened if State had a 20 point halftime lead.

I do watch basketball. I said he did a great job of distributing the ball, and zero turnovers is fantastic. But, we don't have a lot of scorers, and we need him to contribute.

It is very possible to enjoy a win and still see areas that need improvement at the same time.

Novel concept there doc!

I don’t understand your point. It’s the start of the season. We appear to be as prepared as the rest of the SEC at this point.
UK just lost to ****ing Evansville and UF to State?
WTF are you talking about. I’m as big a critic as anybody, but that 2nd half against Murray was damn impressive.

Exactly! I'm not going to lie I figured what we were mainly going to see out of this team this year is the team that came out in the 1st half against Murray State. I was extremely surprised to see them come out and shut them down the way that they did. Tbh I'm glad we looked bad the first half and then looked like a different team in the 2nd. CRB will be able to point to that and say he this is what it looks like when you don't play defense and settle for 3's, and then say this is what it looks like when you play defense and move the ball around and get guys open.
