The Official Tennessee vs. Gardner-Webb Game Thread, 12:00 pm ET, SEC Network +

I wasn't saying he wasn't trying to get a good effort out of the kids but they aren't listening all the time.

Martin had complete games where the kids didn't show up with effort at least This team is only have segments of games so far but it's still concerning and will cost us against good teams

Don't see this team beating "good teams". Enjoy the wins we get.

This team certainly gives effort, but the coaching staff sometimes looks frozen over there. They need to loosen up.

This team has given effort in spurts but far from consistent

Anyone remember Bradshaw giving the line from Barnes???

"If you get beat down the floor it shows a character problem or lack of discipline"

That was during a spurt where we simply were out hustled a number of times.

So when players come off the floor and in their Post Game comments say We were lethargic, they were just mistaken or misspoken?

Damn almighty it's perhaps the most important part of a coaches job to have his team ready.

I am not buying that excuse if the kids said that today. They started out fine. They lost their intensity in the middle 20min

Heard that after the Marshall game.

The issue here is not effort. The issue is learning a new system and having a lot of new guys! We went from pretty much a zone defense to a straight up man to man, and that's a big adjustment to make!

I don't know about that.

I'm not sure if it's "effort" or the pace of play just tires them out.

They do seems to push it down the floor on offense but sometimes lolly gag back for defense.

I'll eat my crow. Baulkman shot lights out and had some good defense and rebounding. Maybe he can be a great portion of this team.

I disagree. Hubbs and Punter would be starters for most schools.

Well Hubbs is a 5 star recruit who would be a starter at most Divison 1 schools.Punter would be a good senior SG for most schools but is forced out of position. Moore is a tweener/high hustle guy who would come off the bench at the 3 spot for other teams.

Most teams would not be counting on them to be leading scorers. For us if they do not score we do not score.

Scoring is far from our problem.

That's why today gives me real hope. A new defensive strategy had some good results. If we can play adequate defense this team can win 16-18 games

Just watched the 1st half again. We were up by 19 with almost 5 minutes left in the half. The last 5 minutes were awful. First 15 were solid.

We even got someone to pull out the go-to "Pathetic" already with a new coach and team. Very nice.

Final score was beyond expectation, and the team pulled away despite fatigue and adversity in the second half. That will need to be a trend in the games we do win this year.

1. You have core players playing higher than prefered minutes out of absolute necessity.

2. These same players are playing an offense that requires them to go as fast as possible.

3. These same players are re-learning (good) man to man defense after an entire year of almost exclusive zone. Which is also a more demanding way to play.

It's not difficult to realize how much energy all these things take, especially on the guards, and why perimeter man-to-man defense is struggling.

"The legs feed the wolf"

Only got to catch about 2 minutes of action on my phone yesterday. That run to closeout the game was impressive. Baulkman was one of the guys that I was curious how he was going to shoot it under Barnes. I think Barnes has feed his confidence and given him the green light with his feet set. We have to make threes to win games and you can't make them if you don't shoot them. If we can get any combination of the bench post palyers besided Mcghee to score 3-5 bucketsd and make 4-6 FTs it will make a world of difference in this team. Another good tune up for this team. Army should be a task of a different sort. GO BIG ORANGE!
