The Official Tennessee vs. #17/20 West Virginia Game Thread, 3:30 PM ET, CBS

For those that saw improvement I honestly believe you saw what you wanted to see and forgot what you wanted to forget about last years team. Yes the formations were different but honestly it was the exact same results. Everyone talking all off season that Pruitt will make so much better halftime adjustments than Butch... well yeah that didn't happen and he had an extra hour! DB's still out of position even with Pruitt's great defensive mind and coaching. It was exactly the same bad gift we got last year just this year it had different wrapping paper.

With next to nothing coming out of practice, and this kind of showing on Saturday as our only impression of the team, there’s a good chance Pruitt will be whining about Spring Game attendance next year too

Does anyone else remember our last tryst with a 3-4 defense? The difference in quality or execution between this squad and Sal Sunseri's band of wandering gerbils cannotY be understated. We will have a respectable year, earn the attention and commitments of some top-quality recruits, and step it up a notch again next year.

You need to look up the word "tryst" in the dictionary before you use it in public like this and embarrass yourself.

Are you suggesting that Pruitt has all of the sudden became a sucky defensive play caller?

I understand we have a young secondary but I noticed there were several times we left freshmen one on one with their NFL caliber receivers . That should never happen. Plus it appears our coaches have not properly showed the defensive backs how to tackle.

Whelp , see ya next Saturday . I hope all that expert coaching shows up after 5 more practices . Seems like the first 50 practices did not change very much . Here's hoping , anyway .

Because if you know football. You'd know it was his assignment. It's called isolation from the play stand point. The outside wr did a come back and kept the CB shallow allowing the slot to get deep behind him. It's the safeties responsibility to roll over and cover.
Which is a scheme problem. A freshman safety should never have been left alone on a AA receiver. We should have never called a play to allow that to happen.

Yes, and the lack of physicality is from Lyle's lack of recruiting physicality and coaching physicality and some other things that have to do with toughness instead of cliches.

That's wishful thinking. Maybe you're right, but many of these kids were highly recruited players (certainly more so than WV's). Pruitt's whole thing is physicality. We looked bad.

Nice third post. Given the fact that our relationship with a 3-4 under Sunseri was not appropriate to be seen in public and ended up with us being screwed without lube on a nearly weekly basis, I'd say the word I originally used was actually somewhat appropriate. I changed it to make the forum more of a safe space for your precious sensibilities; aren't you special?

Yeah. I am as flabbergasted as you, my friend. One bad throw all game pretty much and they are vultures. Pathetic.
Nopr, he still holds the ball too long. He took all the time the line managed to give him. I didn't see many timing throws except to JJ. JJ was a bright spot today I thought.

I don’t agree that we needed to run a 2-minute drill down 13 early in the 3rd. There was no scheme changes that would’ve stopped this. WV is simply better.
By that time we knew we would have to outscore WVU to win the game because the Vols defense was not going to stop them. We should have ran the 2 minute drill from that point on.
I'm not saying we would have won but who knows. I'm certain we would have scored more than 14 points.

JP needs to have a talk with the DC and OC. Why did we not blitz or nickel/dime package more to protect these young corners and safeties. WV did not run the ball that good.
Second qtr. O look great except for that last possession (3 runs???). Second half looked like the first quarter. We did not take the game to them. O play calling was just weird.

This, it really is that simple-We LOOKED BAD today. Not going to bash Pruitt or the Vols. If you look at any recruiting service over the last 5-7 yrs TN has recruited a lot better than WV. They were 7-5 last yr. vs our 4-8. Their coach is in his 8th yr, ours has never been a head coach until now. Regardless, I think most were expecting a much better performance today, especially on defense.

I think you need to understand this year is a wash for Pruitt. No way he is thinking this is "win now" for TN

I would add that we only recruited better "on paper". It still takes a ton of the right kind of coaching to get a h.s. player ready to compete at even w.v.'s level and he better be a fast learner with a lot of core talent if you want him to compete and excel at the top levels of the SEC, we are a long way from there, some of getting there is gonna take time and the right kind of coaching, which has been absent, and some of getting there is going to take getting the right talent AND the right coaching, this ain't gonna happen overnight but we might be headed in the right direction. imo, it's way too early to tell.
