Drove 3.5 hours from Asheville for the game yesterday and here are my observations:
I am excited about the team this year. We should have won the game, no doubt about it... but... we play hard. And for a team picked to finish 13th out of 14 in the SEC, i love the hustle.
I am not going to blame the refs for the game. Calls were suspect both ways at times, but when we got up 14, i had a feeling there would be some ticky tack fouls on UT and there were.
Some individual things:
Williams and Fulkerson were overmatched size wise, but they play hard. Although giving up weight and height Williams was 3-6 and Fulkerson was 4-4 from the field. There were time when both had good position and the point guards wouldnt even look at them. Both make good decisions, I think we can get them the ball more. Both were calling for it and open at times, but no one looked it.
We gave up 22 offensive rebounds, but when I rewatched the game this morning, there were a lot of times our smaller guys let their men come in and tip the ball away. That CANT HAPPEN. The refs allowed for Fulkerson to be grabbed from behind and thrown out of the way, found that weird.
Turner, Phillips played well in the first half, but in the second our offense was soooo stagnant (they combined for 8 turnovers). Turner just dribbles around pointing for guys to go places instead of moving the ball. His shot to tie with four seconds left, was incredibly selfish. We have to run something better than that. Fulkerson was open on the trail. Surely, a left handed lay up over Tony Bradley isnt going to get it done lamonte.
Is Alexander that bad that he can't get some of Evans minutes. Haven't been impressed with Evans so far this year. He took a three with less than four left that would have been huge. Would have put us up six, but missed it. He is now 1-8 from three on the season.
Glad to see the boys have a chance last night, but drove home thinking to myself, "We should have won that one."
