The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

The problem with Barnes retiring is not when, it’s that Danny White will be doing the hiring.
Meh. The bigger issue is that this is just not a job that can draw a proven name (unless it’s one that just got fired like Barnes)

We will be rolling the dice in the mid major lottery like most non blue bloods have to do

That’s the job of a great AD to layout what a great job this is and I truly believe it is.

The problem is there’s a pretty big gap between what our fans think this program is vs what coaches do. And not many coaches want the challenge of following the best coach in school history either. It is going to be a tougher sell than a lot of you think.

They think that it will be easy to stay in the top 25 and get to every NCAAT.

Good grief. Bama is a higher ranked team and our best player was only in the game for barely 10 minutes.

Tennessee is not going to do better than Barnes. I hope I am wrong. Hiring a new coach is crap shoot.

I’m not saying we should steal a coach from a blue blood. Just don’t default the job to an assistant or give it to a coach that has no business sniffing a top tier job yet. This is a top tier job. Bruce Pearl and Rick Barnes have proven that this century.

Idk man. North Carolina and Duke hired assistants most recently. Kentucky got rejected by roughly 86 coaches. Indiana hired a guy who coached one mediocre year at a high major and who’d never won an NCAA tourney game. Louisville also hired a guy who had never won an NCAA tourney game. Memorably for us, UCLA got turned down by a guy coaching a team who’s never made a final four!

Not saying we don’t get a good coach after Barnes, but it will almost certainly not be some sure thing home run hire

A lot of you jackasses in this thread calling for Barnes to retire..... be careful what you wish for. I remember when the LOM bayed for Phillip Fulmer's blood and got it; the result was almost 1.5 decades of pure football hell and misery. Of course, that would require maturity and perspective, something a lot of folks sorely lack

And our hoops don’t have 10% of the brand power that our football program has

It’s crazy how emotional and mad people get. We held bama well below their avg and had 22 more shots. Usually that equals a win. Make 2 of 17 missed layups and I guess Barnes would get credit for a “great job”.

I could've sworn I just saw a poll of anonymous coaches that rated Tennessee as the #3 job in SEC Basketball.

Bruce was a Google hire at the time and Rick fell in our lap
But they both proved the level of success and tremendous support that basketball can have here. And both future hall of famers would literally sell the job to anybody that would ask them about it. We don’t have to give this job to a Kim Caldwell type if you have paid any attention to what he did with the Lady Vols and how that’s not working out.
