For guys who play a lot of pickup, what style of game do you bring to the gym?

I've played a lot at LA Fitness over the past few years and my game had turned into banging down low and grabbing offensive boards and scoring mostly on put backs. This wasn't my game growing up, but where I play 70% or more of shots are thrown up from beyond the arc, just trash. I can score 4-5 points per game pretty easily just standing under the basket and being the trash man, if not more, honestly. Halfway through the game kids start getting tried and a a lot of them don't even run down the floor to defend fast breaks, walk, etc. I was talking to my friend about this the other day. Totally the opposite style of game I came up playing, but the easiest way to have an impact in most pickup games at my gym.

Lost me at LA Fitness :)

Don't get me wrong, there are a few nights per week where it gets competitive at different times... But around the hours when I usually lift we are talking about 15-20 year olds from the suburbs wearing brand new Currys or Durants with matching socks and nike shorts, of which probably 80% of them didn't play in high school.

The type of kids who bring the ball up the court, make 1-2 (at most) perimeter passes and within 15 seconds one of them has tried some crazy Allen Iverson move and thrown up a prayer from 30 feet.

I've even gone into the gym after a heavy arm or shoulder day when my forearms and hands are literally still trembling and scored more points than anyone just by camping out under the basket and grabbing junk. I rarely shoot from outside of a 3 foot radius under the basket. And I'm 6'2" 175lbs... and usually I'm fighting for rebounds with 1-2 guys at most.

It's funny, without fail I will grab a rebound from a brick, airball, etc. and a few of the kids will still stand on an island beyond the arc and call for the ball like their some suburban Kyle Korver waiting for a catch and shoot. And be pissed you didn't dish it to them as they run down the court after my putback. "I was open back there, Tennessee!" "Orange shorts, look for me next time, I'm open!"

"Orange shorts" hahaha

Time to up the dosage.

No they may need to lower it lol. I've been there before, when you take aderall you have to be constantly doing some kind of writing or work or you'll go insane. You'll go into huge elobrate details on everything like Indy does haha.

I take it once or twice a week to help me write out my java coding. I breeze right through it when I do. The next day when I come back and read what I wrote, I'm like wtf how did I even come up with this it's brilliant. Lol

Crap...lol, that's what I meant to say...haha.

I've played with or against these guys throughout HS.

Keegan Bell- dude could light it up, he played for Vandy and then transferred
KT Harrell- I was a Junior in HS and he was in 8th grade, dude was already ridiculous. Played for Virginia and Auburn
Varez Ward- played against him in a summer league. He started for Texas when they had DJ Augustin, he tore his ACL, transferred to Auburn, got booted for Point shaving.
Courtney Fortson- same summer league, was team mates with Varez. Started PG for Arkansas, got kicked out of school if I remember correctly.
Jamychal Green- didn't get to play in this game but watched him from he bench and he was amazing. Started for Bama, last I saw he was playing for the Grizzlies.
Senario Hillman- summer league game at Bama camp, dude could absolutely fly.

Side note: one of the lowest points of my life was playing in a tournament in Kentucky and I got yammed on by a white dude. May have been Dallas.

Best I got to go against was Ron Mercer in AAU, 1993. It's amazing how good a mediocre NBA player is to an average Joe.

Unfortunately I have a bad back. I had to retire from playing about 8 years ago. I feel like an old man. lol

Haha I only take it 4-5 times a month... at the end of the month and at the first of the month. So whenever I do take it I write essays on here.

Yeah I don't blame you. It's terrible taking it if you don't need to get a lot of work done lol. It makes you like a emotionless zombie.

Well, I'm now 56, and hadn't played in at least 10 years. I started playing again last year, and just now am starting to shoot with confidence. Surprisingly, I would prefer to be guarded by the guys under 30. They seem to be the ones who really don't know what they are doing, even though they may be faster and jump higher. My claim to fame, now, is getting rebounds. I seem to have a knack for knowing where it is going, much better than other people. I have to exercise a lot, in between playing, but I have found that it is still possible to have days where I do quite well... Unfortunately, they don't usually let me play the point guard position like I did when I was younger, since they expect me to be underneath, getting rebounds...I usually pass the ball, rather than shoot. Luckily, my behind the back pass is still pretty accurate...I'm no Larry Bird, but I might be if I was 10" taller. I guess he is who I try to emulate the most...That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I always wondered if I should have been on some sort of meds growing up. I was the stereotypical kid who was super over the top hyper active. Rushed through everything, never paid attention to details, and just generally struggled whenever I sat down to do work. Pediatrician basically said "He's a kid, it's fine" to my parents. Even now I struggle with paper work and small details with projects but I get through. I know a lot of kids abuse adderall/ritalin a bit too much but I can't help think some small dosage would have helped high school LC be a lot more proactive.

It's a blessing and a curse having a prescription. A blessing when I need to get something done and pull all of my energy into one task. A curse when friends beg me if they can have some or having to go to my family doctor 4 times a year for checkups since it's now a controlled substance in Indiana because of how much it's sold on college campuses and in high schools. They will only prescribe it 3 months at a time for "new prescriptions" and since I moved from Tennessee in 2014 which is when I transferred doctors I am considered a "newly prescribed patient" in the state of IN. I literally go to the Dr and say what's up and she sends my new script to Walgreens and sends me out to pay my copay.

My main problem is that I hate taking it because it takes away my appetite and makes me 100% anti-social. So when I DO take it my tolerance is weaker than it should be.

Practice should be starting any day. Anyone have insight on that?

Its usually started with quick shoot around. Then they do some stretching. Then maybe some full court dribbling or defensive slide drills to get their feet under them. Then head into offensive and defensive work. Then maybe some scrimmaging... Am I insightful or what???

Every question I had has been answered. Disregard everyone else. Lefteye saves the day.
