Technically, Western Kentucky's "red towel" was around much earlier than the Steeler's "terrible towel".

It's origin had to do with WKU basketball coach E.A. Diddle in the 1950s.

Hilltopper Haven - The Red Towel

I guess it's hard to have a mascot that fits "Hilltoppers" and a red towel, so Big Red seemed like the best fit, lol.

I seen this thing as the Nashville Nascar race in June, not sure why it was there...but the person behind me attended WKU I think and she said they are called the hilltoppers for the same reason as the guy a few posts up said, just because the campus sits on a hill. That has to be intimidating for opposing teams to think about when they play WKU

hey joekylevol, wku student right here.it's sad when people have no idea about our program's tradition. not in football mind you, but we are one of the top 15 best basketball programs of all time.

and for the record, i find it pretty pathetic you guys have to start a thread about how to make fun of a school. r u guys that bored after watching your terrible quarterbacks that this is all you could come up with? good luck going 6-6 this year.

ok, so u do it before every game.only makes it even worse.
you guys were 5-7 last year with a loss to wyoming. you have no business making fun of ANY team.

Good luck trying to avoid 0-12 this year.

Nobody outside of Bowling Green would have WKU as one of the top 15 basketball programs of all time. You're only 3rd best in your own state, if that.

first, for smgvols. if youre a basketball fan i feel bad for u,and your shortsidedness.go read any experts ranking for teams all time and you will always find wku near the top.i guarantee it.im not even upset u dont know it, it's just plain ignorance.also,as far as us being 0-12.yeh it would suck,but so what? this is our FIRST year in the "Div. 1" football...were still trying to recruit guys who can play at this level.so what if were not any good?

i find it funny talking with ut fans.i hate living in this god-forsaken town,and cant wait to be out of it.although i wish i could be here this season when you guys have your meltdown. you do have a good defense, but your offense hasnt gotten any better and that will be your weekness.you will be lucky to go 6-6 this year, and the pathetic part is you guys will be calling for the athletic dept. to fire kiffin after you guys lose to florida by 35+ points.you guys just ran one of your best coaches ever out of town because he had two low years.it is sad.and it's impossible to talk to any of you guys, because you have no sports intelligence whatsoever unless it involves ut.
i mean, why dont u guys get some real tradition like my Notre Dame Fighting Irish? yeh, i said it. try and look up any statistic and we beat u pound-for-pound without a question.and i love debating it with u guys.so bring it.when you guys win half the national titles we've won, or even win one heisman,let alone the 7 we have,then we can talk.

WKU is 14th all time in number of wins. But that doesn't mean they're one of the 15 best programs. I'd like to know the level of competition they've played in most of those wins. They definitely aren't one of the two best programs in the state.

I'm guessing you aren't an English major at WKU, then again it is Western Kentucky. That degree sure is going to pay off. Why didn't you go to your beloved Notre Dame? Oh yeah, they saw your writing.

Street and Smith named you guys #31 basketball program of all time which is OK but not close to top 15. Last Final Four was almost 40 years ago. Come back when you are relevant in your life time.

So far you are the biggest joke in this whole thread. Go run back up the hill.

This information is all new to me - I was under the impression that Peyton Manning was still the quarterback of our prolific offense. I'm only glad I found out before the season starts. :salute:

Fulmer was leading Tennessee on a slow and painful march to also-ran status in the SEC. His accomplishments from the previous decade couldn't guarantee job security forever, so what happened last year was inevitable. You can't make fun of us for losing to Wyoming while simultaneously claiming that Fulmer shouldn't have been let go. Don't be delusional.
