Rule book question regarding safety base……If a runner is only allowed to touch the green bag running to first, then why can the first basemen touch either the white or green base?
Interpretation: When using the double first base the following guidelines shall be followed to properly administer the playing rules.
b. The double first base may be used during regular-season and postseason competition.
1) A batted ball hitting or bounding over the white portion of the bag is a fair ball. A batted ball hitting or bounding over the colored (orange or green) bag without first touching or bounding over the white section is foul.
2) When an initial play is being made on the batter-runner at first base, the defense must use the white section of the double base and the batter-runner must use the colored base with the following exceptions.
Exception 1—On a dropped third strike, the fielder and batter-runner may touch
either the white or colored base. After a dropped third strike, if the fielder is drawn to a position in foul territory on the side of the colored base to receive a throw, the runner may touch the white base in order to avoid a collision. Normal running lane restrictions still apply.
Exception 2—When the defense fields a fair batted ball or throws from foul
territory near first base to make a play on the batter-runner, or when an errant throw pulls the defense off the white portion of the base into foul ground, the batter-runner may use either portion of the double base and can run the last few steps to the base in fair territory in an effort to avoid a collision. In this situation, normal running lane violation rules do not apply; however, if intentional interference is ruled, the batter runner would be out. If the intentional interference is deemed to be flagrant, the runner will also be ejected. In this exception, the defense is still required to touch the white base to complete the force play.
3) If there is a play on the batter-runner and the batter-runner clearly touches only the white portion of the double base, it is treated the same as missing the base. If this failure to touch the proper base occurs during a close play and the batter-runner has not passed the base with both feet, the batter-runner should be called out. If the batter-runner clearly beats the throw to first base but misses the base and has both feet on the ground beyond the back edge of the base, the batter-runner would be called out if the defense appeals prior to the batter-runner returning to first base. The proper mechanic is for the umpire to make no call on this play as the batter-runner has not yet touched first base.
4) On extra-base hits or other balls hit to the outfield when there is no chance for a play to be made at the double base or other plays within the infield when there is no initial play made on the batter-runner, the batter-runner may touch either the white or colored section of the base. Should, however, the batter-runner reach and go beyond first base, they may only return to the white section of the base.
5) Once the batter-runner reaches first base, they shall then use only the white base.

Threw a complete 9 with only 86 pitches? Wow.
Darn special faced 31

COLUMBIA  (South Carolina Athletics) – Brandon Stone threw a nine-inning complete game Thursday night (April 17) to lift the University of South Carolina baseball team over Ole Miss, 3-2, at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.

Stone, who threw Carolina’s first nine-inning complete game since Brett Kerry against Kentucky in 2021. Stone scattered six hits, striking out four and allowing two runs with no walks in the nine innings. He threw just 86 pitchers, 61 for strikes.

Yeah, don’t look now, but A&M is 8-0 since getting no hit and run ruled in game 1 of the series against the Vols. They’re playing like everyone expected them to at the beginning of the season. Looks like they’re going to be a dangerous team afterall.
Just wish they had waited until after game 2 to go on that run

Tigers have taken over since the B6

Yeah. Top of the 6th, with two outs and two on, the ump called a strike 3 that was CLEARLY a ball to end the inning for Bama. One of their coaches got ejected for arguing as well. It was a terrible call. I mean really bad. And since then, LSU has taken over. I have to say that on the previous batter, the ump missed a strike 3 call that, again, was CLEARLY a strike. So you wonder if the bad call on the next batter was a “make up call”. And if it was, it’s just wrong. That should never happen.

I’m not a “blame the umps” kind of guy for any win or loss, but man, I cannot defend SEC umps. They have been just over the top awful in so many games I’ve watched this season. And I’m not talking just LSU games. I’ve seen them make horrible calls in Vol games, along with just about any other SEC games I’ve watched as well.

You would think that since the SEC is without a doubt, the best conference in college baseball, hands-down, that we could find umps that are at least average. We should be able to get the best, but I’d take average at this point. What we have is just horrible in many cases. It’s honestly baffling.

Scoring the umpires and making the results available to the public seems to have helped the last couple of years in the MLB.

Well, our relief pitcher (Benge) tried to make it interesting in the 9th. Loaded up the bases, and even walked one in. Coach JJ had to bring in our second best reliever (we only have two that are good, and we had already used one) to get the final out. It’s crazy to me how bad our pen is outside of Evans and Cowen.

I just don’t see LSU going very far in the post season bc of the pen. We’ve been in a hitting slump the last couple of weeks, until the 6th inning tonight. However, our 1-9 is usually crazy good. But even when they’re hitting, our relief pitching isn’t going to be good enough to win big games / series in the post season to make any kind of significant run. I think y'all will find this out next weekend. I’d be happy if we can take one off of y’all.

The Tennessee-Kentucky rivalry on the diamond dates all the way back to 1909 when the Vols swept a three-game set in Knoxville. UT's 339 games played and 183 victories against the Wildcats both are its second most against any opponent behind Vanderbilt. The border rivals have faced off at least once every year since 1947. UT has won five of its six series and is 13-6 overall against UK under head coach Tony Vitello.

NOTABLE

Doyle Does It Again
For the third time this season and second week in a row, Tennessee's Liam Doyle was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week. Doyle set the tone for the Vols' winning weekend in Oxford with another dominant performance on the mound in last Friday night's series-opening 3-2 victory over No. 6 Ole Miss.

Pitching in a hostile road environment, Doyle was spectacular against his former team, tossing a career-high 8.1 innings while allowing just two runs on three hits to earn the win and improve to 6-1 on the year. The junior lefthander finished with an SEC career-best 14 strikeouts on the night, which also tied a career-high mark that he set earlier this season against Samford.

With Monday's honor, Doyle became the first UT player to ever be named the SEC Pitcher of the Week three times in one season.

Chapman Caps Big Weekend with Clutch Homer
Reese Chapman came up big when the Vols needed it most during last weekend's hard-fought series win at No. 6 Ole Miss. The junior right fielder led the team with a .556 batting average for the series, going 5-for-9 with three runs scored and a pair of walks. He saved his best for last, hitting the game-winning two-run homer in the top of the ninth of Sunday's rubber game, lifting Tennessee to a 10-8 victory over the Rebels to secure the series.

Chapman followed up his big weekend in Oxford with two more hits and two more RBIs in Tuesday's midweek win over Bellarmine and enters this weekend's series on a five-game hit streak.

Kilen's Return Provides Instant Spark
Junior infielder Gavin Kilen returned to action last weekend after missing the majority of the previous three weeks with a hamstring injury. In his return to the lineup, Kilen provided an instant impact with a team-leading six hits against Ole Miss, including his 11th home run of the year. The Wisconsin native also led the team with 10 total bases and had two RBIs in the series win in Oxford.

They hit rock bottom and are now playing like their hair is on fire. Unreal…
