The Official Indianapolis Colts Thread

Listening to Grigson's press conf sounds like Caldwell will be out. Announcement coming likely early next week according to JMV.

who would you think would be in?...besides Cowher, Gruden, or Dungy (the three of which every team's fans seem to think are coming back to coach their teams)

Well I find it kind of weird Fisher keeps putting off making a decision. A reporter from the Indystar reported that Fisher had back channel conversations with Irsay. Maybe the most likely candidate would be Marty Mornhinweg.

Crazy thought:

What if the timing of Caldwell's dismissal and Fisher's hiring with St. Louis is no coincidence?

Thinking that this is a possibility is the only way I can rationalize the Colts holding on to him this long.

Please explain.

It's a crazy thought, I know. Every time I think of an argument to explain it, I immediately dismiss it. I mean, I don't know why Irsay would hold on to Caldwell when it was seemingly obvious to everyone that Caldwell was on his way out. Maybe he wanted to wait Fisher out so the fanbase wasn't clamoring for him to be the hire, only to be disappointed? I don't really think so, but I'm just trying to figure the reasoning here. Maybe Irsay figured there was no way he'd pay Jeff Fisher $7 million/year.

I don't know. I find it hard to believe, though, that they were seriously considering keeping Caldwell.

So the story seems to be, Irsay, Grigson and Caldwell flew to St Louis to talk to Spagnuolo about the DC job, when he turned them down I guess Irsay and Grigson decided the might as well clean house.

Doesn't make any sense.

It kind of does make sense, I guess they felt comfortable with Spagnuolo if let's say the Colts started the season 2-8 they could fire Caldwell and let him step right in as interim head coach. But with him likely taking the Saints DC job they said let's just start over.

By the way, just over 2 weeks and I can get rid of this hideous logo. :dance2:

You and the other justin could very well be correct.

I don't believe Spags said anything in particular that would have led to the firing of Jim Caldwell. Jim Caldwell went to Indianapolis and was sitting in the room during the interview, apparently. I highly doubt that there would have been some sort of comment that would then prompt Colts leadership to fire Caldwell at that time. The only thing I can think of is that during the interview, Irsay and Grigson decided that Spags would be a better head coach than the guy currently occupying the position. That is the only plausible explanation for the Spags interview having an effect on Caldwell's position.
