The Official Indianapolis Colts Thread

So he would've decided to draft good interior linemen if he had a different QB?

You had one of the best OLs of the decade for awhile. It got bad over the last few years, but you're definitely letting this year cloud your judgment. He started missing in the draft starting in 2007.

Bill Polian built a team that went to the playoffs from 99-2010. He built a defense that was designed to play with a lead. The running game was excellent until 2007. The point is, there is no point in discounting Polian's tenure at Indianapolis without Peyton Manning. It is impossible to know how the team would've been constructed without a first ballot HOFer at QB.

The offensive line was pretty damn good. Tarik Glenn, Jeff Saturday, Ryan Diem, Jake Scott, and Ryan Lilja.

Guess how many of them Polian drafted? He drafted Diem, and Scott. Meanwhile, the other 14 O-linemen that he drafted (other than Charlie Johnson) were total duds.

Last season every scout had Castonzo as a high pick, so if he turns out to be a bad pick then everyone was wrong not just Polian.

Yeah, I wasn't counting the 2011 draft in my analysis cause the jury is out still on Castonzo and the other OL they picked up.

Whatever, man. Peyton was the Colts atom bomb and Polian pulled the trigger on him. He could've drafted Leaf.

Here's to a decade of Locker/Luck battles, and Locker coming out on top.

Not drafting Leaf just means that Polian is not an idiot. Up to that point Peyton Manning was the most proficient college QB in a pro-style offense ever. He had the pedigree, the talent, the size, the smarts, and the work ethic. Easy #1 choice. I know some people tried to prop up Leaf as the #1, but it wasn't ever going to happen.

I am not sure it's that simple. There were plenty of people that had questions about Peyton, if I remember correctly he refused to make certain throws on his pro day which raised flags, some had Leaf over Peyton.

Polian said later he used to stay up at night thinking about how fortunate he was to have drafted Peyton over Leaf.

What head coaches in the NFL are also GM's? Timewise, I think it would be difficult to do both. If I were Cowher, rather than being the GM and having to deal with all of the salary negotiations and scouting, I'd just propose someone I knew I could work with to handle those things.

Mike Holmgren was GM, Executive VP and head coach when he took Seattle to the playoffs for the first time in over a decade in 99.

No matter how sure the sure thing is, when you have the #1 pick you are going to question it. It's going to keep you up at night. It's horrifying to think you can make the wrong decision crippling your organization, which is why GM's almost always end up going with the "safe" pick, if there is one.

I could see a one year contract in New York. Dude is a marketing firm's wet dream, I'm sure he'll have plenty of money to make by playing a year in New York.

Listening to sports talk in Indy, the overwhelming thinking is IF Peyton is 100% healthy he will be back next season. I think now that the Polians are out, it's more likely Peyton and maybe even Wayne and Mathis could be back.

Chris and Bill Polian are out. This clears the way for a big time head coach.

The right move to make

No wonder manning's neck's been bothering him...it's almost in retrospect like he wasn't just carrying a team but the (misssteps of the) entire organization at times with that front office
